Half-consistent spell effect crashes

Recommended Posts

Use OBMM to run a conflict check. Knowing what mods alter entries for shaders, spell effects, or spell listings might help track down the cause.

Your method of "cleaning" could have made things worse. You should have uninstalled the game, removed ALL mods entirely, cleared your data folder. Then ONLY downloaded those mods you see as crucial to your gameplay, and test with ONLY those mods installed and active, using a NEW game (cheat as needed). Removing data files while a mod is still installed, or using a game that makes use of a mod which is no longer present can lead to even more problems.

As for load order, I cannot find one of Dezdimona's posts to quote here since it offers good guidelines to follow when setting up load order.

Alright, some more revelation...

First off, I have access to the useful load order post, let's not clutter this thread any more than need be!

Your method of "cleaning" could have made things worse.

I may have been a little rough on the edges there but I took great care to make sure this "cleaning" (neither of us like the word anymore it seems  ) had (technically) nothing to do with the problem at hand. However, having experience in Oblivion's... stability concerning these things I agree with you. I, of course, still have "pre-cleaning" saves (and their corresponding load orders & master lists), so I can restore the complete previous install if the current one has added problems.

And about the new game, ironically I had forgotten about this earlier and did some testing before I saw your latest post here. The thing is, I can't replicate the crash in any shape or form in a fresh new game using my current full install, making all possible tries to eliminate mods one by one void. The saves I'm trying to salvage have some age, and have gone through quite a lot of mod changes. In hindsight (gotta love that), could the instability stem from the saves themselves?

I've been going through the conflict reports, but I'm only seeing what I already know: a shock effect overriding another (on purpose, without side-effects) and a detect life effect replacing the vanilla one. Didn't find any shader changes. A few spell lines here and there but nothing relevant.

The complete lack of crashing in a new game still makes testing the mods borderline impossible, though. Does anyone know if it's at all possible for only the saves to be faulty?

Also, I'm running weOCPS, but it has never recognized the crash.

I believe that wyrebash can be used to clean a save of mods that are no longer installed. It is possible that a mod saved with mods that have since been removed may be responsible, or something actually wrong with those saves. If you have used mods that changed various things through scripting (usually OBSE), removing the mod will not undo the changes it made.
