Vista + Fallout3 Mods = ?

Hello all,

I'm extremely new to the whole modding process and I have a few questions. I read over the faq and not sure if I am doing things right. First off, I am using Vista, and I am not loving it. When I am downloading .rar files, I unzip them using i7 or whatever..but apparently the files never..ever go where I assign them to go. No idea why that is. No warning, nothing. They just don't show up when I check out the fallout3 folder or the data folder. The only ones that seem to work somewhat normally are the .zip files. Is there some feature I am overlooking?

I am trying to get a few mods to work, and I am unsure if I am doing it right. The Robco Certified mod, for instance, was one of those crazy ones where I downloaded it, moved the files over ..and nothing. I had to drag the .esp file into the data section for it to show up, but I doubt it will work. I went into each creature file folder and hand copied the files in them into the file folders which already existed under the same name. I tried just dragging the folder itself, but again, I get that weird situation where no BZZT wrong! error message pops up, but at the same time, I can't find the folder. It is like I deleted it or something.

Anyway, I am rambling. It is late. I've downloaded a ton of mods and I have 0 faith any of them will actually work. Anyone have a list of mods they would recommend? I liked the looks of the GNR expansion, but after downloading it once and having the file disappear into thin air I am a bit squeemish on trying again (I swear! The damned files are gone!)

Any help would be grand.

oh, I got that .BSA file that the Faq recommended I download, and i'm pretty sure that is in place. I haven't messed with it yet, and am not sure which mods require me to do so. It is activated though.

One piece of advice for people posting their mods, PLEASE!!!!! idiot proof your instruction for how to install. Don't assume everyone knows the drill by now, as I can't be the only one completely lost when it comes to getting these things to work.
