Modding FNV

I absolutely LOVED the Fallout games and played the heck out of them on XBox360. I lost a few months of my life on those two games. LOL

I haven't played either in some time now since I've been quite absorbed into Skyrim. Skyrim is a truly amazing game and the modding community has done some truly awesome stuff with it, too.

But since I've played Skyrim so much on both 360 and PC I'm itching to get back into some Fallout. The kookiness and exploring are inviting. So I've acquired it for PC (having only played it on the 360) and I am wondering how the modding community is with New Vegas. Are there a lot of really good mods? Can it feel like an almost new experience? What kind of stuff is suggested to use? Any performance enhancing mods that work well so I can play it on my laptop?

I just really want the lowdown on how it is these days I guess. There seems to be a lot of mods to choose from. So I'm kind of lost on body/face mods, weapons, gameplay enhancements, etc....

PS: I've never modded FNV before so any tips would be nice. If it's just like modding Skyrim then that would be great.

The modding community in Fallout: New Vegas is alive and well, mods are plentiful and high quality.(Sometimes massive in scale.)

Can't go wrong with visual mods, especially given that Fallout New Vegas mostly uses Fallout 3's ugly outdated assets. These are my essential visual enhacement mods(Including a mod with that exact name.):
(I don't know how a laptop would handle this visual mods.. Probably not too well.)

Animation Replacer: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/38527/?tab=1&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D38527%26preview%3D&pUp=1

NMC textures: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/43135//?

EVE: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/42666//?

WRP: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/38285//?

NCR Trooper overhaul: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/52721//?

XV enclave:(Makes the best armor in game look the part): http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/44490/?tab=2&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D44490&pUp=1

As for bodies I'd suggest picking one of the type 3's, almost every armor requires them. For males, Breeze or Robert's, Robert's is better, and makes it so you don't look like a mutant with veiny freak hands, but breeze's is more compatible.
For faces, I'd suggest http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/39218/?tab=2&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D39218&pUp=1 It's not compatible with any mods that change npc inventory however, such as the trooper overhaul. If you play a female character, I'd highly recommend Nuska's Wotw, http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/51084//?

I'd put ADAM here is well but it has a buttload of esps that do things that I don't care about, and some are necessary just to get the replacers to work bug free..

Suggest picking up an ENB, which one is up to your preference, as most differ dramatically in style. I use blackout

4GB, necessary preformance enhancement: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/35262//?

As for gameplay, my favourite mod is not in the nexus, it's jsawyer mod, you can find it by google searching. It's a mod made by the lead designer of New Vegas, it fixes a lot of bugs, as well as correcting some imbalances, and adding the difficulty that the game should have had.(As well as making hardcore actually hard.)

Other mods I like are:
Nights are darker
Unlimited traits(Traits have pros/cons, so why limit them?)
Faster wait time
http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/53082/?tab=3&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fid%3D53082%26user%3D1&pUp=1 HD faces, but I don't use the human, it's a bit of WIP, I'd recommend using the ghoul texture/mesh though, huge improvement.
If you want it to feel almost like a new experience, not just visually, I guess you could use Project nevada. I personally don't like it, but it's basically a huge collection of lots of different gameplay changes, and addons, and basically just makes NV a whole new experience.

For new worlds to explore I'd suggest Beyond Boulder Dome, http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/46907//? it's about the size of a DLC pack(Maybe larger) has new enemies, weapons, areas, new npcs all voice acted; VA quality ranging from decent, to great, with the occasional awful(Chinese soldiers.), long multiple choice quests like the base game, and is just overall my favourite DLC style mod.

For new weapons I'd suggest pretty much anything by millenia, although the downside of those mods is that along with levelled lists and vendors, they also spawn in doc mitchell's house, which can get annoying if you install a lot. My favourite being the Pancor Jackhammer and the duplet.

I use more mods than this, but I don't remember any more off the top of my head.

Thanks for the reply, OHSB. It's appreciated.

I already watched some of Gopher's videos and installed a few things (like NVSE, new UI, OMod, Stutter Remover, etc.). I have gone in game and played with a bit and it's running quite well, especially for a laptop. I can run the settings much higher than I can with Skyrim, that's for sure! :D

I've already added NV Redesigned 2 as that's something I was looking for. The vanillas faces are just horrendous in this game so that's a welcome addition. I'll be checking the others and searching for some hair/face/body mods next.

Thanks again.

SOOoooo.....I now have it up and running. Running pretty well, too, all things considered. I can get smooth play with the details on high and load distances at a decent way out. But I am running it at 1024X640 and using the fake full screen mod.

My laptop is a couple years old so it's not that powerful. Integrated graphics (1.5gig vram, though), has a 2.19gHz processor (OCed to 2.53), 4 gig of RAM and am using two flash drives for Ready Boost. Haven't used Razer Game Booster on this game yet, but I'll try it if heavy combat gets too choppy.

I just bought it on steams sale! So I'm joining you on this haha. I played it for probably over 200 hours on 360, but am thoroughly invested now since acquiring it from steam. I had to slow it down to High resolution as well. At default I could run Ultra settings but with all the mods I have installed I had to move down to High L . Which stinks because I installed the texture packs to enhance the game which is stunning in comparison to 360 on its own merit, but I have nowhere near the amount of mods as some people I’ve seen. I’m waiting for Black Friday sales now so I can get a better graphics card so I can tinker with my own mods. I’ve done modding in the past but not for Fallout so I’ve been reading on GECK when I get free time

Sounds like you're getting ready to rip it up! LOL

I hope you craft up some cool mods. I'm always up for seeing some new stuff.

Indeed I am, so far GECK is pretty reasonable compared to other programs I messed with it's just finding the free time when not working on school , or being with my family ( I have a two year old who eats up my time ;) ) There are defintely some mods that are missing that I want to tinker with but I gotta get the basics down first before I get anything advanced which is what my idea is.
