SkyrimSE: Saved games disappeared

Vortex version is 1.6.14 (although it was a previous version when the event happened).

All manual saves for all characters in Skyrim SE have disappeared. 'Autosaves' are still there, but nothing else.

In-game: I can see the full list of characters I've started, but for each one, when I select it, only the last two autosaves are shown.

In the 'saves' folder: only 'Autosave' files are present.

When I create a new save in game: it does *not* show up, either on the Load menu or in the Saves folder. I don't know how to find where, if anywhere, it is being saved.

I scanned the disc using Disk Drill, and it found *no* recently deleted files in the saves folder, which makes me think that the files have been moved elsewhere. All I can think of is that Vortex may have shifted them to another profile, but I can't find where profiled saves are stored. Can anyone tell me?

(Steam cloud sync is not enabled for saves.)

Look in your Documents under My Games.

Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/Saves

All the global saves are in that directory.

Profile specific saves are in separate subfolders with names like HkiFOihzj.

If you look on the Profiles page, this name will be shown as ID.

Try going to a profile mods page and Deploy. That may straighten it out.

Thank you. I know that's the folder for saves, but there are no subfolders there. Which is unexpected, because there are certainly other profiles with saves on them.

Vortex even gives me the option to import saves from one of the other profiles (under 'Transfer Save Games' on the Saves tab). Selecting a regular save file and asking for 'copy' - does nothing. No error message, but also no change in the main Saves folder. (There may be a change somewhere else on the drive, I'm not clever enough to monitor for that.)

"Deploy" didn't do anything, either.

OK, so in case anyone searches for this topic...

The answer was a Windows update. I think one of the security updates (which are installed automatically) had locked me (or possibly Skyrim) out of being able to write to the saves folder, at least in the way the "save game" process does it, and the Windows update (installed separately, manually) corrected it. I still don't know where the saved games disappeared to, though.

Very confusing. It would be nice if Windows told me when it was going to do something like that, but whatever. Thank you to everyone who read this message and gave it any thought.
