Essential downloads?

I picked up my copy of fallout 3 yesterday, and although owning it on 360, is the first time ive played it on pc and were looking to getting mods etc. The thing that suprised me most was, for one that i have no idea which patch to get. From what i see there are official, unofficial, and fake patches? What are the best patches to install so its a bug free as possible. I was pretty suprised by the amount of mods available too, i spent a couple of hours scanning through them and ended up not knowing what to get, so in terms of adding to the original gameplay of fallout what are some of the best recommended ones to get?

Cheers

Luke

First of all, you pretty much HAVE to get the official patches. Having said that, I don't think there are all that many USER-patches that aren't designed to completely revamp the game.

Fallout Wanderer's Edition, Mart's Mutant Mod, they're designed to make the game more challenging and harder for the bored/experienced Fallout user.

Personally, MMMF3 is probably my favorite.

Also, one thing to note is that you essentially REQUIRE Fallout Mod Manager in order to make using mods extremely easy.

Cheers... normally i would always get official patches but i read somewhere that the 1.5 creates more bugs than earlier versions, and the unofficial patch said to upgrade from 1.1 onwards, then later read that all the patches are buggier so i left it. I take it upgrade to 1.4 then?

To be honest i had more CTD's using the Fakepatch and Unoffical patch then i do with 1.5 also FOSE didn't work even though i had the dll that is normally the common problem and my mod order was setup how the install instructions were said.
