recurring game freeze at windhelm

has this happened to anyone? i get a recurring game freeze if i travel overland to windhelm. i'll arrive at the front gate and i'll notice something's a little off. if i try to save, the game freezes.

yes, although it's something that's happened in the past before i had survival mode. however, i did use the frostfall mod back then

Nothing to me looked suspicious in your modlist. But I have heard that survival mode can be script heavy, and I don't know if maybe it is causing it.

Here's a guess: there are two scripted events that occur when you approach the front gate of Windhelm: a key NPC (character) leaves the stable-office, and, if you are advanced in the story line, a dragon attacks near the stables, and may be scheduled to fly over the city.

 

So, scheduled scripts can freeze or crash the game if 1) you have mods that affect the NPC or dragons; or 2) have mods that affect quests involving Windhelm (i.e., Stormcloaks' Jagged Crown); or 3) are playing on a lower-end PC, as graphics-intensive mods may cause a hiccup.

 

We're (two of us weighing-in) not concluding anything, but just offering ideas for troubleshooting.

thanks for replying. curious ... what are the events? is one 'blood on the ice'? which involves the high elf npc who walks from the stables into the town? i've completed that quest. 1) mods that affect that npc are shiva's hair replacer (i think). my dragon mod is diverse dragons. 2) windhelm mods...i use noble skyrim, and i have a tree mod that puts trees inside the city. i don't use open cities. nothing that mods quests 3) my laptop isn't low-end. nvidia rtx 2060 6gb, i7 2.6ghz processor, 16gb ram, nvme ssd

What resolution are you playing in? I have played at 2560x1600, and now in 4k uhd on desktop, and the 8 gb video card ram is almost immediately filled up, with 12-22 gb (out of 64) of system ram also filled.

 

If you have SKSE-based mods in your LO, you could try Crash Logger, depending on your game version. There is also Net Script Framework for SE v 1.5 and lower.

 

Did you clean your Skyrim SE master files? I re-installed uncleaned masters on 1.5 just before the AE offering, and it seemed to reduce crashes. Now working from 1.6.353, cleaned masters per latest SSEEdit, and it seems that many crashes are back. I think that I will go back to 'dirty' master files when I can finally update to the latest version of SE, to see if it again reduces crashes for me.

Crash logger and .net are great, but my game version is latest and they're behind by about one update i think. This issue pre-dates skse actually. It'll happen if i fast travel to, eg darkwater crossing, then ride up to the windhelm gate. If i quicksave or open the gate, the screen will freeze and i'll have to pull up the task manager and force close the game

Check out the Crash Logger page ( https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/59596 ). One of the latest posts on the page (10 Nov) states that 1.6.640 is the version they are using. The requirements are the latest Address Library and the matching SKSE64 for your game version. Farther down in the Requirements tab is a file to help read the logger output.

 

BTW, I also have many random crashes in the area between the Giant camp and the Orc stronghold south of Windhelm.
