GRRRR: unsafe storage in Thieve's guild house

So I figured the containers in the Dareloth house [thieve's guild HQ] basement and upstairs would be safe storage, put some unique armors and about 20 sigil stones in them.

Gone, all gone: only the chests on the top floor are safe. I have some saves, but they are from at least 20 real hours before, so not worth loading.

Just a warning...

That sort of thing usually happens after installing mods.

That is why it is recommended to make a new save before

installing. What happens is that the original contents re-spawn.

While this may not happen all the time it is always a risk.

The houses you can buy do not do this so your stuff is safe(er).

I have found that you can just pile stuff on the bed and

never loose anything. I did this on my first play of Oblivion while

I was staying at the fighters guild.

BossDweebe, Dareloth's house in in the vanilla game.

I'm sure you're not the first person to find this out the hard way. One of my characters lost all his stuff when I stored it in a barrel in Chorrol (back when I first started playing).

You stored your stuff in a unlocked container in a known thieves hang out? And it mysteriously vanished?

Saves are cheap insurance. I have thousands on each game.

Duh ! ... So there you go. It is now known far and wide that I never joined the Thieves Guild.

I can see what bben is on about though. So if ever I do - I won't....

But, yeah! Anyway - Beware the re-spawning container....

My mistake was assuming that the Dareloth house was equivalent to a purchased house-- just wanted to warn others.

I like the 'known theives hangout' thing: pretty funny, but I think it was just a re-spawn situation. None of the special items like the spell breaker shield that I've left laying on the floor have gone missing.

I did actually witness a mace I left laying on the street in SI being picked up by an NPC when Bighead triggers a riot: it's the only time I've ever actually seen it. After the fight, he hung it on his belt and kept it hanging on his belt. Tried to pickpocket it back, but it didnt' show in his inventory.

So that explains why I have had a few items go missing when I left them outside of buildings.

I stopped leaving things outdoors after that.

Because I never lost things on the bed of the fighters guild I assumed that things were safe just

about any where.

It's pretty amazing what the AI gets up to in this game....

The cells in the game are reset every 3 game days as long as you have not been in them during that time. That's how the game cleans up the clutter of dead bodies, dropped weapons and clothing you leave laying around. If you go into a room, knock the clutter off of the tables, toss all of the books on the floor and leave a mess, if you wait 3 days and go back, it should be cleaned up. So, if you are cleaning out a dungeon, and have to leave a pile of valuable loot laying around because you can't carry it all. Be sure to at least check back in and look at your pile of loot every 3 days or it will probably vanish.

If you just leave an item almost anywhere it will vanish when the cell resets. The only safe places are those 'safe' containers in player owned houses, which are specifically excluded from the reset. There are mods that add safe containers in many places. Most but not all modder made player houses have mostly safe containers.

But to be sure, save often.

You have to destroy it to get it put into his inventory, or at least reduce its hit points until it does less damage than his usual weapon. A disintegrate armour/well spell is useful for this.

Of course, if it's really annoying you the NPC can be killed then resurrected via the console, and you just loot his body in between coomands.

I'm not sure how the cell reset works: there's more to it than a three day reset.

If a shop is closed or I'm trying NOT to bump mercantile, I leave piles of loot on streets for later. I left a lot of clutter in most towns before I did SI, stayed there until I'd 'secured the Fringe' [way more than 3 game days], and my stuff still seems to be where I'd left it, even in the distant towns where I didn't visit immediately on return.

Early in the game, I strip the bridge bandits, leave anything I don't have weight allowance for on the road so I can take it later. I quit doing this once my strength is up and finances are in order, so it's been several game months since I've bothered, but the loot remains.

The items I left on the floor of the TG house are still there: Bearclaw helm, spell breaker shield, random amber armor. They've been kicked around a bit.

Interestingly, a lot of my items are sinking into the ground. More a glitch of the game than a feature, but one sheild in particular showed just a the rim and part of the handle after a few [game] weeks on the street outside the Skingrad fighters guild.

It's definetly wise to use safe storage where available, and be very wary of leaving anything you *really* want out in the open. But out in the open is much safer than a respawning container.
