Crash when saving

This is a v1.5 patch issue.

The problem is this:

[technical stuff]

When you enter an exterior cell with non-persistent items added by a mod via an esp, and then leave the cell, attempting to save crashes the game from that point on. Interior cells seem to be unaffected.

[/technical stuff]

Beth broke something in the 1.5 patch. IIRC, FOOK and MMM (and I would guess "Wasteland Player"as well) are known to cause problems, though, generally, any mod that adds something to the wasteland will usually be an issue (since hardly anyone sets the "persistent" flag unless they have to). Try turning off all of you mods, backup you saves, and walk around the wasteland for awhile (I mean go somewhere far away from where you are). Start turning on mods, one at a time and repeat. You will see which ones cause the problems.

One work around is to reinstall, update to v1.0.0.15 and use the latest version of the Fake Patch, though some people have had issues getting that to work right, it seems to be a tricky install and not for the technically faint of heart...

Another, and more complex plus time consuming method is to edit your mods to set all the non-persistent items to persistent. Probably not a practical choice for many, including yourself (with the ">>>TOO<<< many to name" comment).

Thanks for giving us a clear answer. Geez, editing +40 mods? Fook off.

I have this problem with 1.5 as well. And it's been a while now too! Sounds like they plain broke the game for a lot of folks (most folks?) who use mods. That's not cool. I should think they'd have fixed it by now. If nothing else, I'm certainly not buying any DLC if I can't play the game..

To use games for windows live, you need the latest official patch, I believe. I don't know if the fake 1.5 works or not with it. At this point, I guess I don't care as much because I was going to start another new game anyway.. I suppose GFWL makes it easier (only a little) to use DLC.. And I'm sure there's more achievments for me.. I don't care too much about those, but I guess they're sort of fun.

How do I check a mod to see if any items not persistent? Under what circumstance would changing something to persistent break a mod?

Thanks for the good info!

I'm no technical expert or modder, but I figured out the reinstall/patch to 1.0.015/install FakePatch and UF3P method. Solved all the problems I was having with Broken Steel. Still playing all my mods and old savegames. Reinstalling isn't as tough as it sounds, it doesn't remove anything you already have in the data folder (i.e. any mods installed) and doesn't remove save games (unless you tell it to). You'll also need Quazzy's BSA manager program (unless you want to mess with editing the .ini, which I did not).

Hate to refer you to other threads, but you should read the FakePatch thread and the UF3P thread. That's how I figured it out.
