Returning to Skyrim

How do you motivate yourself to fix your mod setup?

About this time of year I often get the urge to climb mountains, slay dragons, and sit in hot springs. Then I realize Steam (despite all efforts) updated Skyrim behind my back at some point and an unknown portion of 238 active .esps (+SKSE and so on) need updating just to kind of get back to where I was in, I think, 2014. Which was all I really wanted.

What motivated you? Are there some awesome new (used very loosely) mods that will run on a slightly updated potato? Ambitious old mods that made it out of beta in spite of all probability?

You can stop Steam from updating Skyrim by setting its "appmanifest_489830.acf" file to READ ONLY. Not that it helps you at this point unless you have system restore save point prior to the update you can roll back to. I didn't think it was worth updating Skyrim for the few "new features" and the potential compatibility issues at the time. I still don't but, a lot of mods have been updated now for the Anniversary Edition. I have 700+ mods working with 1.5.97 I've been working on for years. Seems crazy too me to jeopardize all that work by "upgrading."

It is still possible to download older versions of Skyrim from Steam but, it's somewhat complicated.

Oh, how do I motivate myself to work on modded Skyrim? Good question! I want to obtain the knowledge to mod/and make mods for future Bethesda games like Starfield and ESVI. Skyrim is the only game I'm aware of that has 10's of thousands of mods of all kinds of varieties that allow you to totally customize the game the way you want it to be.

No two modded versions of Skyrim are alike. Unless you install a modpack. Making the game conform to your vision is part of the fun of modding!
