I'm getting Oblivion for PC soon...

I'm getting it for PC soon, I played it on Xbox 360 and I love it but since I saw a video on YouTube of all the mods available I thought it'd be better on PC.

2 Main questions:

1. How well can my PC run this game?, y'know, with the mods and everything.

Here are my specs:

CPU - Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz

CPU Speed - You Have: 2.99 GHz Performance Rated at 4.49 GHz

System RAM - 3.2 GB

Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, 32-bit (Build Service Pack 16001)

Video Card - ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series (ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x5B60))

2. Can I hook my 360 controller to my PC and play the game? (I'm willing to play Keyboard and Mouse but that really gives me a lot of pain in my hands.)

I hope someone out there might help me, much appreciated.

The cpu speed should do OK, but this is single core if I am correct. Dual core would help.

The 3Gig RAM with Vista is OK, but more is always better with Oblivion.

The graphics is problematic. Just which of the three listed is it ?

Truthfully, the whole series is somewhat dated. In that series you

would want the 1050 card, and it would want 512RAM.

Getting a more recent graphics card will also likely mean a more powerful psu.

Usually around 500W, but as little as 450W will work if the AMPS are high enough

(read, good quality psu as in Antec, Corsair etc.)

This is not to say you won't be able to run the game, but once you

start moding you will be confronted with the reality of Hi res mods, and

as you have already played the game, you will probably want all the good

eye candy that can be offered. That is not to say you will need the super

Hi res some of the mods are offering, but even those that are in the next

few steps up from vanilla will require some power.

I get by with an AMD Opteron 180 dual core @2.4/2Gig RAM (XP), but would like more RAM,

and an nVidia 8800GT w/ 512RAM. Most of the setting are up full most of the time (they are

adjusted automatically with a mod/plugin called Streamlie). My game is still a bit jerky, and

will crash more frequently than a higher end computer. (Oblivion crashes on most computers,

more or less, and sometimes in between, and when you least expect it.)

My cool gaming system is so HOT that it periodically REBOOTS during gameplay. I save often and keep a fan running back of the CPU. I only run a handful of mods. I also get CTD on fast travel, so I disabled the autosaves. Also, sometimes, especially entering Imperial City, I get some stuttering on my video. So, be prepared for any/all of that.

My specs:

System: Dell XPS 730X 64-bit

Processor: Intell Core i7 CPU 965 @ 3.2Ghz

RAM: 6 GB

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate SP1

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280

So there you have it - Oblivion can be a savage beast.

Auto saves are definitely out with Oblivion. They also tend to become corrupt.

Sinister - With your system you shouldn't really be having a problem with stuttering in IC.

I reckon you may need to look into your system set-up and optimisation, and maybe the

mod set-up as well.

I have no fast travel problems, and only get stuttering while on horse back. Never

while on foot. I have heaps of mods including one of my own which changes armour and

clothes on over 100 NPC's, and uses about 1Gig of HD space, and only get occasional random

lock-ups and CTD's.

My system dosen't even overheat in a non air-conditioned house with summer temps up to 35 deg Celsius.

That system will run Oblivion fine, However maybe not at the top resolution, as BossDweebe said. Also it really is a beast. It will strain your hardware like no other game. Be prepared to back off on settings if you do have problems. On a PC you will spend much more time playing with the PC to get it to work just a little better. It's not going to be 'set it once and forget it'. When you do get it running, come back here for more tips.

@Sinisister allowing you system to overheat will shorten the life of the components. The Video card you list is not the one in the specs so I assume you have replaced it. Dell is well known for skimping on power supplies, However, they don't list the power supply in their specs - evidently they don't think it is very important. it may be borderline.

Be sure you are not clogged up with dust. especially around the video card and CPU fans. PCs are notorious dust bunny farms. If you have any air filters be sure to clean them. Make sure all fans are working, and blowing in the right directions. If all fans are blowing in, or all blowing out it causes an air flow problem. You may consider adding fans to help with the cooling.
