pawzseven
surg, himself has taken our old girl ( German Shepherd Dog) to the heath, and I declined to go as have been too busy doing housewifey things, so rushed up to my computer to see if you had replied. My, you are a treasure! I shall certainly give some of your recommendations a go - and do the Geck thing. I have never used it, but now I see it is a bit like the editor in some other games as you tell me I can move stuff with it.The mini hideout is in, well, UNDER, Springvale, right next to the red rocket. I believe the mod has been updated since I last played F3, but it is a cosy little pad with all you need and plenty of storage. Quite homey, not so dingy and decrepit as some homes. I have had about six homes, but don't remember their names and exact positions now, apart from Commander Darwin's shack - but that is a bit of a cheat as it has stuff in there that you really didn't oughta use at the beginning of the game. My advice would be to go down the list ( about 43 pages I think) and just try them out until you find the one that suits. Back to GECK, I may need a bit o help with that, but will give it a try on me own first. Cheers m'dear!
surg23
Hey, I actually had to Google "Heath" haha, not a phrase I am familiar with, I guess that stems from the fact we have no Heaths around here lol. Oh, and I didn't realize until your last post that the Mini-Hideout was actually a mod, that probably explains why I never found it. :O - Well I guess that's enough of my silliness for now. Still looking for a nice home though, I wish there was something similar to one of the rooms owned by those escaped slaves up north, but with a window you could actually look out of. My megaton home has served me well, but suddenly I feel too secure there, so close to society. Some day soon I hope to find a nice secluded shack perhaps with a water-view, or merely the sound of flowing water and sunlight piercing through a window. Well, it's got to be better than living with a slobbering dog who likes to sit in my Christmas tree and a robot that secretly despises me and may one day kill me or poison the water that it dispenses. The house-hunting continues. Also, let me know how you are doing with GECK. In the meantime I will try to document some useful edits. pawzseven
surg, where do you live that has no heath- Iceland? Sahara? Mars?. This is Hampshire UK, plenty of dog-walking places here. Lovely corner of the world.Oh yes, should said it was a mod shouldn't I - sorry. I d/l'd a mod for a home called Broom Cottage ( I think) t'other day. Has a hedge all around and a pond. I did not keep it because it had missing meshes ( red blocks with exclamation marks) for lots of stuff, and even though I got rid of those, still couldn't see it properly, so uninstalled. Maybe that would suit you. Placed close to V101 it was, You get the flowing water bit in the mini hide-out at Springvale if I remember correctly, but no windows with sunlight dappling through the trees. No such luck. I did once have a cottage way out to the north, but something nasty came in and did for me, so I went off that one! Well, have the GECK for F3 now, and later, after a bit of knee-bending, finger-waggling and deep breaths, I shall have a go. I ain't no modder though, so don't expect much of it will make sense to me, but can but try. Ey-oop, gotta go, duties call....
surg23
Lol, well I can assure you I don't live on Mars, but that's not to say I have never been there, or that most people might say I was even born there. I live in a semi-suburban part of Sydney, and it seems out here we are not so well spoken as to refer to places in such intricate detail. We just call it "Bush" and if its not a Bush its a road and that's pretty much the extent of our knowledge regarding land mass. As for the house hunting, I don't really have any good news, although there are some fantastic additions to the Megaton home, not very useful for someone who is looking to get out of Megaton though. Apart from that, most of the house mods seem to add too many things and almost all of them are free and have stuff already inside them which really goes against my grain. I need to lower my standards and just go with something incredibly simple, but also requires you to purchase/earn your home. Surely there's something like that around somewhere. You were saying you had a Cottage up north and something nasty came in and "did for you" I don't quite understand what happened there ? I think I shall go look for this Cottage mod, I like killing nasty things. :) Good luck and godspeed with your umm ... finger waggling. :P
pawzseven
It was up way out in the wild bits, can't recall exactly but feel it was near the edge of the map. I saw this 'thing' while exploring - and it saw me too, and came a-runnin. I dove back indoors, assuming I would be safe, but I wasn't. Next thing I knew it was attacking me and then it all went black and I fell down.... ho ho.So you are a minimalist and you like a challenge hey. OK, if I see any simple homes that look like they might suit such a one I shall come on here to tell you. Meanwhile... feed critturs, do dinner, then GECK. Just thought, if it is 3.30 in the afternoon here, what is it where you are?
surg23
Ahh right, the nasty bitey thing followed you into your house hah! I actually love that creatures can navigate through cells after you, although not very convenient at times, as you found out. But hey, I just found a house mod and installed it just this minute, it's called Fairfax Apartment. It looks quite simple and it appears you can see stuff outside your window, how neat is that! The only problem so far is getting there. I just tried fast-traveling to it to see whats what, but there was a huge Raider party and some outcasts rioting literally on the doorstep lol, the 4 power armor heavy outcasts were obliterated in seconds and I soon met with the same fate. I think there was close to 12 raiders in that immediate location armed with gatling guns and all sorts of sharp hurty things. The last thing I recall was my head exploding inside my helmet and the stringy bits flying off my face in slow motion. Man I love this game! Hopefully I can report my findings once/if I ever manage to get inside there. It's 3:00am over here at the moment. I am not working and going through a rough patch in my life, but thankfully video games can cure depression hehe. Edit: - Phew! I finally made it there in one piece after the finest battle ever I might add. That Fairfax house is actually pretty decent, it has more rooms than I care to use and frankly I got lost in there for a moment. The dynamic windows are really nice, I can't quite tell yet whether it is a representation of the exterior cell or a real-time view of the exterior, but there is a Raider sleeping on a bed in the building adjacent to mine, though I haven't been prying on him long enough to tell if he is real or not. There are also light switches in every room that actually work! which gives it a more homely feel. There are also two Jukeboxes that have a special script to allow song selection and a "looping" function. I'd say the worst thing is its filled with a few loose items that I must dispose of somewhere. It has an interesting storage facility too, using mostly Ammo crates stacked on a big shelf. I will have to get used to not rushing over to loot them every time I see them. Will do nicely until I find something ideal. pawzseven
ah, well good on you for finding something... sounds a bit big for me, but I might download and take a peek sometime, if I can get in, just to see what you describe.Guess I will be 'house-hunting' too as my brush with GECK has fallen flat on its face. I think I imagined that there would be some facility like in Sims3 editor ( OK, I'm female - we get to play girlie games!) where you can actually pick up offending items like trashed cars and move them, provided they are not actually on a lot.I could not find anything like that in GECK. Been through the menus and icons and not got a clue what to do - how do you get to the cell you want to modify, for instance? Anyway, I shall swallow my disappointment about not being able to access mini hideout and go house-hunting.... bye for now surg
surg23
The simplest way I could explain how GECK works is that you must load a resource file to be able to edit or view it's content. In this instance you wish to view a cell (exterior) in Springvale, this cell and its content are stored in its respective source files, those being Fallout3.esm (contains all vanilla content, and is the parent file for everything) and your Mini-Hideout.esp (which contains the modified content) So basically, the game engine reads from the master file Fallout3.esm, - everything that loads after this file will still utilize it's content with the exception of what has been modified in following source files (esp's and esm's) Now you know in which files your content is stored, so now you must load them into GECK. Just under the "edit" tab there is a little yellow folder, click that and check the boxes on the files you wish to load. This where things get a little complicated, you can either make changes directly to a master file or esp, or create a fresh esp containing your edits, this is signified by selecting the option on the load window "set as active file" - to keep things simple and safe we will create a new esp. So go ahead and load Fallout3.esm and also Mini-Hideout.esp, this will take a moment to load and may stop responding for a second. Once loaded you can now access its content via the object window and various tabs. Just next to the edit tab click on the view tab and select "Cell view" if it is not already selected. In the Cell View window select Wasteland and scroll down until you find Springvale and double click on it. This will load that cell and its contents into the Render window as well as showing all its contents in the Cell view window pane. Now you are ready to start modding yay! Once you are happy with your changes click save and presto, you have just made a mod, but don't forget to activate it in FOMM and also be sure that your mod loads after it's parent files (Fallout3.esm and Mini-hideout.esp). Depending on what task you have or content you wish to edit you may need to do the following: Open Documents > My games > Fallout 3 > GeckCustom.ini - Find the line: "bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=0" and change it to "bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1" Save and exit. I'm still learning about GECK myself, so there may be easier or more efficient ways of doing this. Hope this helps. PS - writing a mini-guide while your drunk is not a very good idea. pawzseven
coo, thank you surg ( don't you ever sleep?). I have spent the last two hours going through all the buildings mods on Nexus. Nothing quite hit the spot like mini hide-out, but two or three possibles. Small, clean and tidy isn't in great supply it seems. Anyway, I will follow your instructs tomorrow and see how I get on. Thanks again - and your mini guide is jus' fine, and appreciated.
pawzseven
Mornin'/Evenin' surg, hope you feel better today.I had a bash at GECK, and got roughly to where I wanted to be in Springvale, but none of the car shots were the one I wanted to move, and when I got a perspective that allowed me to see the base of the red rocket from a distance, there was no car there, so am puzzled.I do not believe the car was there when I used the original mod, some years back, so Rayek's mod has introduced it, I suspect. There are a couple of variations of that mod available, one in German, one in Italian. I s'pose I could load one of those and see if they have the car, but I suspect they probably will have. So, guess I will have to wait until I can find a way of blowing it up.... have to go see that chatty girl in Megaton to see what she can sell me once I have sufficient credits.Anyway, thankyou! I now know a little bit about GECK that I can maybe use and build on at a later time.Cheers m'dear. Gotta go and help Best Beloved troubleshoot our cooker. It is gas but has electric ignition, which suddenly started tripping the circuit when used, so we have to keep it off. That means we can't use the oven as that will not allow any gas without the igniter being active. Christmas is coming and people will be expecting a turkey dinner, so we got to fix it. Happily he is a retired electronics engineer and has all the tools of his trade to hand, so can at least trace the problem, if not fix it. They seem to charge an awful lot just to come out these days, so am hoping himself can mend it, but.. fingers crossed..Sick joke: what is black and frizzled and hangs from the light bulb? .....Irish electrician! Sorry Ireland - no offence! Edited November 30, 2013 by pawzseven
