Yet another CTD after intromovie/load game

Something really wierd happened to my Oblivion recently.

It constantly crashes after the intro movie when starting a new game and neither of the old save games will load, i just get CTD 'Oblivion will now close' message (standard windows error encounter message.)

I have tried removing old settings from 'my documents'. Installed patches, official and unofficial. Installing the game to different folders, running with default settings and NO mods, OBMM or OBSE. But i still can't get into the game. It's very wierd because it game ran fine for many many hours of gameplay, with mods, OBMM and OBSE, with maximum settings – without any problem.

And just suddenly when i manually exited the game i got a CTD and the game hasn't been able to run since.

What i can do is run Oldblivion, but i don't see why it's related to my problem. I have a very highend system and like i said i had no problem running he game earlier. All shader models are supported.

I had made no driver updates or hardware changes before the crash occoured. The game simply stopped working.

So what makes the game crash even though a 100% clean re-install with no mods, OBSE or OBMM? patching makes no difference.

I'm so fed up with this. Seems like there is some garbage in the windows registry or something... Can this really be a result of mod combinations gone wrong??

Please help.

When you reinstalled did you clean the registry? A failed install, or uninstall can corrupt the registry entries and give strange results.

Here is a link to my uninstall/reinstall procedure that includes cleaning the registry.

Yeah i'll give it a shot later today and report how it goes. I have used Ccleaner when trying to fix this problem but i never tried to reboot before i did it. Might work.

Do you recomend removing/uninstalling OBSE and OBMM as well even though they aren't involved in the clean install?

Thanks for quick reply!

The reason for rebooting after removing stuff is to allow Windows to flag the entries as orphans. This allows CCleaner to easily find and remove them. The when you reboot after running it, It allows Windows to redo the registry and remove the gaps left by the cleaning.

I tried a different cleaner, but it removed the shortcut icons for my usb devices that weren't plugged in at the time.

If you read the entire procedure, It gives you the option and recommends removing OBMM, OBSE and other utility programs. Then reinstalling them later after downloading the latest versions.

I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but it didn't work.

I even tried the unofficial patch, but to no avail.

There must be some gremlin preventing me from this game. Every other game works fine.

I guess the only 'easy' solution would be a total format of my drive but that's too much work for just a game.

I'm off playing TF2 instead. I give up, tried everything by now. Hope some wizard get this sortet out.

Btw, my system is (still) XP32, but Oblivion worked fine for so many hours so i don't know what happened.

Thanks anyway guys!

When you first reinstalled, before doing anything else did you try to start the game and play? With no saves, no patches, no mods, no Shivering isles, No OBMM, No OBSE, No Wrye Bash, No anything? Only bare Oblivion, right off the disk.

Unfortunately, yes. It was still the same issue.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for bumping but recently i tried to pick up Fallout 3 again and guess what?

Same strange behaviour like i have with Oblivion.

Menu works fine - i try to load or start a new game but right after the intro video i get CTD.

I read that Microsoft .NET Framework and K-Lite codec packs can cause problems. I uninstalled/reinstalled .NET Framework and made sure that the codecs would not interfere with the games (followed a guide about this) but this changed nothing.

I'm starting to suspect it has something to do with Nvidia drivers... I found out that Bioshock won't start either but it have worked perfectly for many month.

Steam games still work perfectly though. Going to try newer beta drivers or older drivers to see if it will solve anything.
