deeveer
I've been playing Fallout 3 PC version for about a month now. I'm at the part where I need to find a G.E.C.K., and I'm already capped out at level 20. A friend of mine says I'm probably 2/3 of the way through the main plot of the game. Another friend says not to install Broken Steel until I've beaten the game. He says to save my game just before the end (however I am able to find that out, lol), and then beat it. THEN install Broken Steel, and reload my last save, then choose a different ending. I'm not sure what this means, but all I know is that I'm already capped at level 20, and I still have a TON of stuff left to see and do. I'm wanting to install Broken Steel right now so I can continue leveling. I don't use any mods, and I really am not interested in doing so. Anybody have any recommendations? (oh, by the way, this is my first post. HELLO ALL!!!)
nekoali
I don't have Broken Steel yet myself, but it is my understanding that to use anything in it, you MUST finish the main storyline first. Just being level 20 isn't enough, you have to complete the game. The key point to save at is when you receive the quest Take it Back!. Once you start doing that quest, you are locked in to the end game and can no longer go back and adventure around (or play in Operation Anchorage or The Pitt). So once you get the quest, save your game and keep that save as the jumping off point to do any other quests or such that you want to do.

I'm wanting to install Broken Steel right now so I can continue leveling.Broken Steel adds a few minor things here and there in the regular game (an npc here, a abandoned shop there. Minor minor stuff.) but generally is pretty self-contained in that it takes place after the main quest-line ends. Thus, waiting until the game is nearly over to install it is only really wasting xp. I played and did everything when O:A and The Pitt were out. It was a pain in the butt to grind to 30 (FYI: The amount of exp from 20-30 is the same as from 1-20) once I actually dropped in BS, since I was constantly having to rest for certain encounters to respawn. FINAL VERDICT: Install it. It won't hurt.
deeveer
thanks for your comments, guys. this is truly a remarkable game. i played the first fallout like over 10 years ago, and i loved that game. i wish i had picked up this game last year, but then again, i'm glad i decided to pick it up at all. it's restored my faith in PC gaming (which had previously been ruined by WoW). Michlo
Welcome to the Nexus. My advice would be to go ahead and finish and then install it. I would also recommend you re-think your stance on mods. This, like Oblivion, is a game which absolutely benefits from mods. Not only do they add a ton of replay value but they also fix or enhance aspects of the game which Bethesda didn't. If you don't want to use any big game changing mods as yet perhaps you could dip a toe in the water with simple cosmetic mods such as detailed eyes, fractured nature. Once you do start using mods, just go slowly. Don't add a ton of them at once. Just add one or two, make sure everything is working as it should and then add more. Using the mod sorter and the mod manager are key. My recommendation too is to always keep a backup copy of your data folder from before any mod additions. This way, you have a "clean" copy to revert to should anything go hideously wrong. :) Finally, for your saves, it is always recommended that you have save games from all sorts of points along the way. In any case, I hope you continue to enjoy the game and the community here. Cheers.
nekoali
Hmm, interesting and informative... I had got some details wrong in there. I thought you couldn't level past 20 until you were finished with the main storyline, even if you had Broken Steel installed. So definitely worthwhile picking up before that point then. I do have one question about the DLCs though. If you get them off of Live, do you actually get the install files that you can burn to DVD, or do you have to re-download from Live whenever you want to reinstall. I decided to wait and pick up Operation Anchorage and the Pitt on disk since it's coming out soon, but I was going to download the other three, so that I don't have to wait, or spend $50 to get the game of the year version just so I can get Mothership Theta... But I always like to have a physical copy of the install disks in case of problems, but I don't like playing with Live enabled, I find it to be buggy for me when it comes to logging in. Tprocheira
IMHO, I think you should do whatever you want, but in case of Broken Steel, it would be good for you to install it now, as you will be able to level even more (as you say, you're capped at level 20). Broken Steel is different from the others DLC's released by now. Broken Steel does have a side map for you to play into, but, you actually can play it on the Wasteland (not like The Pitt that every big thing in the DLC is in The Pitt). The "main" Broken Steel's quest line is still located outside of the Wasteland, but you can see the effects of it outside. For example, the purified starts to work, and a part of the river that cuts trough D.C is blocked and contains clean water. You can also check for new dialogs, new weapons, etc. Anyways, I think this is the best DLC released by now... \\
