Best mods for my playstyle? (details included)

Hi,

I played Skyrim on a friend's console shortly after it came out for a couple of hours. My impression was that it had some real potential, and obviously had some pretty graphics, but would require a ton of mods to make it into a game worth the money (by my standards). Well, it's been some years, so I assume there are some good mod's out there, and with Skryim Legendary on sale at steam it will be easier to make it "worth the money." Of course, everyone has their own idea of what makes a great game, so let me tell you my preferences.

Morrowind (unmodded but with all expansions) was my favorite game when I first got it. (It is still in the top ten). Oblivion was good, but not as good as Morrowind. Unreal World (a Finnish RPG) is also in my top 5. A highly modded version of Oblivion is arguably my favorite game of all time, right now. I'll tell you what it looks like in a second, but first let me tell you the type of characters I like to play in ES games.

I always play a mage for at least one play through. By mage, I mean a pure magic character using no physical weapons at all unless absolutely necessary for survival (at lower levels). I've always played a ranger at least once (this holds my interest for a good while). I play melee characters for a level or two until I get bored with them. I've also played a Nordrick style character for a while and I like my vampire thief/assassin for a good while. I know some mods are better or worse for different builds so if a mod is either better or worse for a build, please let me know.

My (highly modded) version of Oblivion has:

FCOM/OOO: for somewhat unleveled monsters, a harder economy, and some variability in Oblivion gates, and more difficulty in general

A hypothermia mod: adds realism

An Injury and fatigue mod: adds realism (nasty when combined with hypothermia mod

A Hunger, thirst, sleep needs mod: add realism

Midas Magic: makes magic tons better, adds more books to research things, new places to explore, and you have to explore to find spell components

Deadly combat: doesn't really help me any but gives enemies at least a chance

Roleplaying dialogs: better RP

Alternate start

Kvatch Rebuilt

A bunch of mods that change little things

A bunch of mods that improve the landscape

A bunch of mods that improve the graphics

So I've found Frostfall, and I know there are mods for Helgen rebuilt, Midas Magic, and alternate start. But what do I need to add to bring Skyrim up to my standards for an RPG?

Skyrim just screams "RANGER!" to me, although my first character was a Druid Rune Witch (no armour or weapons) until she maxed out and then starting functioning as a Ranger as she needed more levels for her main skills.

If you have the Legendary edition with all the DLC, I'd think you'll enjoy these. Some are ESSENTIAL.

Sounds of Skyrim doesn't work anymore I think. There's a missing master that's not on Nexus anymore. I went Audio Overhaul for Skyrim instead.

I'd say, SkyRe or Requiem. Both are pretty lore friendly, but they up the game difficulty in so many ways. Requiem according to reviewers is insanely difficult at the start, but starts to taper off when reaching higher levels. SkyRe on the other hand is said to level up with you better than Requiem, but at earlier levels is still relatively "easier" than Requiem. I haven't played Requiem personally though, but adept level on SkyRe in my opinion is more difficult than Legendary difficulty on vanilla Skyrim. Even on Legendary difficulty, I can take on wolves in the wild, but in SkyRe I got murdered. Seriously. 2 hits and I'm dead. My fault for not wearing armor, (mage type) but stil.

Although honestly? I say play through the vanilla game once. That way you'll know which parts of the game you want changed and you get the mods that address your needs.

How do you mean? They've been back up for six months.

They always worked for me, anyway, as I never had Civilisations. And the thing that actually trashed people's games was removing them and continuing with an old save. If there had been no panic and people had left them in, there'd have been no problem.

I just had The Wilds and The Dungeons, anyway, and they never caused a problem. I did try the new Civilisations and I hated boiling, bubbling sound of alchemy stations and the sounds of drunken crowds and music coming from half-empty taverns and inns. It was enough for me to remove the mod, but the latest version does not cause save bloat.

Love the others, though, and they still seem to be working now that I have enabled the DLC from the LE DVD.

I payed over $100.00 for skyrim and all it's DLC (bought them when they were brand new) and I can honestly say it is without a doubt worth it thanks to the mods! You can literally make skyrim into SEVERAL utterly different games!

Skyrim has the single best modding options and community of any game ever, hands down, no exceptions. It blows oblivion and morrowind put together out of the water. I totally agree with you, that UNMODDED morrowind is one of my all time favorites, more so then oblivion, but modded right oblivion can be better, because morrowind kinda sucks in the mods department. Skyrim however, modder properly, is my number one favorite game of all time. Before I get into my list of the most 'important and essential mods' for skyrim, I want to show you my set up, since I think you will appreciate it. It's based around one specific overhaul, Requiem, which makes skyrim feel more like morrowind and other old-school hard core RPGs. though some people claim it makes the game to hard, for someone who knows what they are doing in an RPG it just makes it hard to START OUT. people seem to think because by level 3 you can't kill 80% of the enemies you encounter in the game that the game is 'to hard' but I find even skyrim on legendary difficulty to be just unrealistic difficulty wise. Requiem does one specific thing, and that is it makes you EVEN with EVEN level NPCs and enemies. In vanilla, if you are level 10 and fight a level 10 enemy, you are going to kill them every single time, because you have a natural advantage. Skyrim also scales every enemy in existence to roughly your level, thus, even on insane difficulties, you have an edge over everything in the game, no matter what crazy hard core mods you install. Requiem unlevels the world and takes your edge from you, something a lot of people can't handle, but something I find keeps the game fresh and interesting. The decision to use requiem is not one to take lightly, as it is incompatible with a lot of other mods because it's basically 100 mods combined into one.

For Visuals I use/suggest the following, assuming you want to keep FPS and memory usage at a max, which I highly suggest, since Skyrim has a problem with CTDing when you play to long with high def mods installed. I have been doing my best to avoid this at all costs with my skyrim install, and at the same time keeping it looking fantastic.

2k textures (use lite option) - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/607//? - as long as you use the light option, has very minimal performance hit, and looks fantastic.

Tamriel Relaoded - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/46925//? - No performance hit at all, thous some textures look really crappy, I suggest installing all of 2k textures ACCEPT landscapes, then this, THEN 2k textures landscapes! Also, avoid the denser grass options if you want maximize performance! The hit is rather low if you do go with them though.

Climate of Tamriel - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17802//? - Basically no performance hit, and dramatically changes the outside world, though you need to use it with a mod like ELFX to make insides look better again, as it does weird stuff to light sources like lanterns, torches, and fires.

Enhanced Lighting and FX - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27043//? - Like RLO, but I personally like it better. It's actually a bit more realistic, which is weird since the other has realistic in it's name. I also believe RLO doesn't work with COT. ELFX also has this amazing smoke effect it adds in to candles and fire, which is just stunning.

Ultimate Lighting Overhaul - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/37846//? - Very performance friendly SweetFX mod, like ENBs, but not glitchy and basically no performance hit! If you like darker nights, look for the optional preset I uploaded for it "Dramatic Cinematic" I use that preset in the screenshots below.

Realistic Water Two - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/41076//? - Use the low res options if you want to maximizes performance, but the medium shouldn't be a problem. There are a lot of water mods, this one simply looks the most 'real and natural' instead of 'stunning and shiny'.

Static Mesh Improvement Mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8655//? - Edits a lot of simple meshes to make them game look WAY better. Has basically no performance hit. if you use with Tamreil Reloaded, make sure to install the SMIM optional folder!

Here are some screen shots of what my game looks like, using these performance friendly visual mods. NOTE; I get about 50FPS on average, but I sacrifice some FPS to Denser Grass and the more resource consuming grass options of TR, I suggest avoiding this if you want to maximize your performance and more grass isn't important to you.

http://static1.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/48000-1-1385348953.jpg

http://static1.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/48000-3-1385349095.jpg

http://static1.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/48000-3-1385348954.jpg

http://static2.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/48000-1-1385678993.jpg

Alright, for none visual mods, I will only list the ones I simply can not play without. You will have to find for yourself what you like, but all of the following mods are so amazingly well done and add so much tot he game without dramatically changing it I simply can not suggest them enough.

First, the "must have" mods. There is really no reason at all to not install any of these few mods.

Race Menu - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29624//? - Makes it so you can do soooo much more with character creation

SkyUI - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3863//? - Basically a must if you use mods, adds in the MCM Menu which lets you edit mod options in game from a menu. Also changes around the look of the menu a LOT, as well as the favorites menu. If you don't like the new menus added by this mod, use SkyUI Away - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29440//? - This lets you keep the MCM Menu, but avoid the new Menu design!

The Unofficial Patches - They fix countless things, I cant even describe. Download and install each one for each DLC you have active and the main game.

Skyrim - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19//?

DawnGuard - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23491//?

DragonBorn - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/31083//?

HeathFire - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25127//?

I suggest; Immersive Armors, immersive Creatures, Immersive Weapons, and Interesting NPCs

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27644//?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19733//?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/24913//?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8429//?

These four add in tons of armor, weapons, NPCs and enemies, none of which should have ANY performance hit, and all of which are VERY well made and fit seamlessly into the game.

Alternate Start - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9557//? - only use this if you make new characters often and want to skip, the intro, or want to have more roleplay friendly starts for your characters. Let you pick from dozens of starts for your characters, including race specific ones!

FrostFall - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11163//? - Makes Skyrim itself an enemy! You now have to survive the cold, build camps, and more!

Realistic Needs and Diseases - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/26228//? - You now have to eat, drink, and sleep! goes great with frostfall!

How do you mean? They've been back up for six months.

~.~

I tried installing it a few weeks back, it crashes my game. Apparently only Wilds work, the Dungeons and Civilizations are looking for a Sound Process Overhaul (can't remember if it's esp or esm), and when I checked on Nexus, it was set as hidden by the author. I'm sort of wary on getting from other places other than Nexus, so I went AOS instead for less hassle.

Well, they are not hidden now and the only place to be wary of I think is the Steam Workshop. TESAlliance and AFK mods are fine. Nexus is easier and more familiar, though.

But if you have another sound mod anyway, you're good to go.

I use all three SoS with the CoT patch for each, and I never experience any CTD or issues. It is important to NOT use the CTD patch unless you are having CTDs without it, because it can cause CTDs worse then the normal version can. lol I have also tried it with other sounds mods, and the only issue I have ever encountered is that if I have a specific sound loop is disabled, it still plays if I load a save with my character in that cell. The only noticeable example being, that if I load up in an inn I still here the "50 random people mumbling inside the walls" that I find very distracting and creepy. This and the similar sound loop in cities I find to be the only bad parts of SoS, as skyrim is a very sparsely populated place, and I avoid mods that add NPCs because almost all of them create CTDs.

When you are in the middle of nowhere, in some run down, itty bitty inn shared by you, one lonely orc, and the barkeep, and you can here a dozen people mumbling constantly... endlessly... even at 3 in the morning, it's very very.... o_o what's the word.... maddening.

Yes, THAT is the very reason I took out SOS - Civilisation. The emptiness and calm of the Wilderness is what gives Skyrim a lot of it's charm. You never know when you'll meet a sabre cat, troll or a dragon! A wayfarer's rest Inn in the middle of nowhere should be just as calm and quiet.

I did use the Immersive Patrols mods for a long time (there's nine of them), but there were just too many of them every few hundred yards.

But I'm trying his new Populated Lands Roads Paths.esp, which seems to be a lot lighter and more in keeping with a wilderness where everyone is off fighting an invisible civil war.

I didn't feel a need to disable it, just turn off about 3 of the options (taverns shouts, city crowds, and tavern crowds) when I load a save in a tavern it still plays the tavern crowds loop though. =[ i really like some of the other sounds civilizations adds though, so I can live with that to keep it. it bums me out though, because I usually make hard saves and stop playing while in taverns >.<

and the only NPC mod I have ever liked is Interesting NPCs. I was looking at that new mod you mentioned, but a lot of people reported weirdness and bugs in the comments, so I'm gunna give it a few more weeks of bug fixes before I give it a shot. lol

I do like how the 'wilds' sos adds in animal sounds. Normally if you heard say, a wolf howl, that always ment a wolf would slam into you sometime in the next 30 seconds. now you can never be sure!

SoS just REEEAAAALLY needs an MCM menu. lol, I have almost uninstalled it simply because it doesn't, in fact if requiem didn't force me to wait until after I start my character to edit it's MCM menu I would have uninstalled SoS for that very reason!
