just specific ones you will have to test them one by one, but if you wait a bit most people are trying to fix there mods up to work with 1.5 patch

I found that most, if not all, mods worked for me after installing BS but before completing the mission Take It Back! Except for the occasional 'crash on save' problem. However, once I woke up "two weeks later," I could not advance the storyline unti I turned off all mods. Once I got my mission, I turned them back on and everything was great - until it was time to level up. The game froze each time I selected a perk. This problem was also cleared up by turning off active mods. With mods on, the game also froze at the very end of the last BS main mission. Turned them off, problem solved. My solution - a very unsatisfying one - has been to turn mods off right before leveling up. Of course, you lose everything that way, but at least it lets you have some essential features, like cross-repair, working most of the time. Currently, I only have FOOK running. I'm really looking forward to a fix and am very grateful to any and all who are making efforts to fix the state of things.

How did you even manage to disable FOOK, continue, save, exit and enable it again?

As far as I know and tried.... FOOK is a pretty large overhaul and disabling it made me crashed when loading.

i just unticked the FOOK boxes in FOSE, restarted the game, leveled up, quit, rechecked the boxes and restarted. no crashes. in fact, i've had no crashes since starting BS, though i did have a lot of 'crashes on save' after updating to 1.5 but before i started the BS missions. i'm hoping that once i reach the level 30 cap, i won't have to worry about this freezing anymore. ideally, a patch would be better but this is definitely an improvement over being forced to play vanilla fallout

Did you restart a whole new character after BS and 1.5?

See if that worked resolving the 'crashes on save'?

I did start a new character after installing BS and 1.5, if I remember correctly. That's when the 'crashes on save' began. They would happen every few hours of play, most often after leaving Rivet City but elsewhere as well. I reloaded, crashed, reloaded, crashed a few times before it cleared up for another few hours. Finally, I finished the main quest and started the BS quests. I got no more crashes. I did have problems getting a couple of quests to either start or finish, plus the leveling up problem, all of which vanished when I disabled my mods. I'm at level 29 now, and once I reach 30, I'm going to re-enable all my mods and cross my fingers. Hope this helps!

EDIT: As it turns out, it was FOOK that was causing the freeze. I just leveled up to level 30 with all my mods on but for FOOk, and no freeze. Mods included MMM, Enhanced Children, Hair Pack, SP_Destruction, and loads of others. All but FOOk were on when I successfully leveled up. With FOOK on, the game froze when selecting a perk.

It took someone making a workaround mod to jump start Rotchild, but I finally got broken steel to actually kick on, and here's what I observed. After the 2 weeks later thing, the wasteland gets heavily modified by Broken Steel itself.

It adds the water caravan stuff to the entrance of Rivet City, overhauls the Jefferson Memorial and Citadel inside and out.

There are ambushes

for the water caravans

and various quest locations added with new markers everywhere. Anchorage and The Pitt both modified small, relatively isolated bits of the wasteland, basically creating a "portal" to a new area for their content. Broken Steel's "wasteland overhaul" while great for making the story feel like it continues, is bad for mods that modify the wasteland, which nearly all of them do.

The major problems with Broken Steel (and the 1.5 patch required to run Broken Steel) seem to fall into three main categories. World space that has items added by a mod, those items disappear after the first time you pass through the cell. They are there first time you visit, but if you go back later, they're gone. Closing the game and re-launching will put them back in most cases, but they're going to vanish again.

I've seen on these boards, but cannot definitely confirm, that having companions along, that were created by a mod, makes you crash whenever you try to zone. I personally don't think this is 100% true. I took Follower Amata with me all the way through

the metro tunnel to Edwards Air Force Base and onto the mobile platform

. I sent her home so I could sneak through the platform easier, but she zoned with me plenty of times on the way.

The third category is "WTFBBQ Damned 1.5!!!" of stuff that worked fine before, but now you crash like a test dummy and can't figure out why. For some strange reason I can't loot armor anymore, or give NPC's new armor to put on. Game CTD's every single time the body goes to update. If I mangle them into tiny chunky tidbits before I try to take their armor, I'm fine. I can change armor all I want. I try to re-dress an NPC, or loot armor off a corpse, CTD every single time. That one I'm pretty sure has something to to with the male body replacer, but that's not even using an ESP, just archive invalidation. Females I can strip naked with no problems, go figure :P

So the rumor about Broken steel needing 1.5 is not really true then? I can try out broken steel without patching?

Plus based on obfuscate, all I need is that jumpstart rothchild mod and I'm pretty much safe to go and play BS. The crashing is limited to the same stuff as mod clashing crashes from what I see.

@quartet: Thanks, now I know I can use STALKER with FOOK :)
