Classless XCOM EW

Since the release of XCOM EW, I was thinking about how interesting would be to remove the concept of soldier class, now that we have Second Wave Options like Training Roulette, Hiden Potential and Not Created Equally? Any soldier could be able to equip any weapon, but they would be not exactly effective without the relevant skills (Sniper Rifle without Squadsight, for example).

 

The idea is to reduce the classes to 3 (MEC, Rookie and Operative), with Operative being able to learn any skill from any of the four classes (with Training Roulette). The most basic skills could be attached to the weapon. (Head Shot directly on the Sniper Rifle and Supression to the LMG)

 

I just don't have any idea of how it would interact with the Rocket Launcher, but well, it's just an idea.

 

PS: Got a soldier with a really, REALLY bad set of skills? Send him to the Cybernetics Lab!

The single class thing is easy: Rename all the classes to operative.

 

The everybody has completely random skills (no base skills) thing is harder, as you'd need to change the internal coding to allow all skills to be changed (if we could get this working with the three perk mod we had for EU, that'd be even cooler).

 

After that, remove all skills like suppression (weapon skills) from the list. Add in any new skills you want.

 

Replace all class-based weapon properties with eWP_AnyClass (or whatever that was called). Add on the desired abilities.

 

With more modding, you could turn the rocket launcher, battle scanner, and smoke grenades into items.
