Help with modifying a mod

How do you modify an existing mod and save it with a new name, without overwriting the original? Is it necessary to change the original esp into an esm? The CS just seems to want to save-by-overwrite with esps, unless I've missed something.

(NB This would be for personal use unless permission were granted for circulation).

File - Tools - Save with new ID.

EDIT: It gets an extra file called map when you first save it.

The map file I just made from a small esp had 0 bites.

I think I have done this with a mod in the past and just tossed the map.

Anyway it's worth a try. Alll the info is there when I check the Details.

EDIT: I just did another one with my personal people mod at 860 Kb. It made

a map of 32 Kb. The mod works as normal with the map deleted.

My guess the map is a file that is created in the process of making the esp.

A temp file of sorts ?

Maybe someone can answer this question for us.

Thanks Boss -- I'll look into that. I wondered about Tes4gecko to convert the original to esm, make the adaptation, save that as esp with a new name, then convert the esm original back to esp. Probably time I started experimenting, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel so I thought I'd ask the community. I'd like to do some tinkering with a companion mod without losing either the original or the modified version.

EDIT: Right. Well since writing the above I found a section of the CS Wiki that appears to cover this stuff:-
