help with modding

I'd like to apologize in advance if what im about to ask was already answered somewhere but I've spent the last 2 hours trying to figure this one out but im having a hard time finding anything on these forums because im using a phone that isn't fully compatible with this site. I, sadly, don't have an internet connection on my computer where i live.

What i want to know is how to mod Xcom EW, specifically, DefaultGameCore, balancemods values.

Modifying the .ini file inside config folder in game directory makes no difference in-game and using resource hacker just crashes the game.

I've looked at some posts around here where ppl were saying to force the exe to read the .ini from config folder but i couldn't find anything about HOW to do it.

How can i mod the game? Pretty please? :)

Hi Code99,

if you have non-Steam version (free, alternative), than I'm afraid we can't do much for you. XComEW.exe of said version is using checksum, so the game crashes in case the executable is edited. You can download HashMyFiles and use it to determine hash of the executable (no idea what type, maybe MD5 or CRC32 - try). Once having the hash, search where it is stored (hopefully outside exe). Total Commander has good search of text inside files. If you manage to find it, you can edit the executable and update its hash.

If you have Steam version of the game, get XCOMModHelper (forum thread link) and use it with -c EWConfig.xml and that should be enough to load DefaultGameCore.ini from Config folder - it's comfortable way. Another way is to use Resource Hacker, but you already tried and seems you have the other version of the game.

When it comes to internet, I was satisfied with my Android phone. Enabled data transmissions on the phone, then wi-fi hotspot for computer connection and usb connection for powering the phone. PC connected to wi-fi and I was happily surfing at a place, where foxes are giving good night.

I see ...

I have the non steam version and since i don't have an internet connection at my home ill have to wait until i can go to my brothers place so i can dl hashmyfile and try the method you suggested (my brother lives in a city so he has internet while i live in a rather isolated little town with no internet, its just way too expensive to get it here).

In the meantime ill try playing the vanilla game even tho i don't like some things here ......

As for my phone ... Sadly it ain't so ''advanced'', its an older Nokia phone. I have tried using my phone as a way to get on the web but couldn't find a way ... Besides i have a limited internet service on this phone anyway

Thank you for your reply.
