How do you add NPC in town (or somewhere else)?

Hey guys,

You guys are probably aware there are a lot of mods out there adding bunch of creatures all over the world of oblivion.

But one of the mods I installed (I'm not really sure which on it is) added a goblin in the Imperial city and the guards don't recognize it as a monster and they won't attack it. I thought that's pretty funny and now I wanna add a few more of those... goblin residents.

Anyone got an idea how does this works? oh and I never created an .esp file by myself, so if you can explain it in detail I would really appreciate it.

You'll need to get the ES Construction Set (CS) if you haven't already got it. Then start in with the CS wiki, which is full of tutorials from beginner onward. You'll find out there how to put objects & NPCs into game cells, change their properties, save as an esp, and so on.

To make a goblin peaceful, turn aggression in it's AI down really low, to like 5 or 10. It probably started at 100. More importantly, change it's factions. Get rid of all it's warlike factions. Make it's factions match those of the nearby people in town. You won't be able to make your goblin talk using normal methods, but he won't be attacking people or being attacked by the guards and townsfolk. You can even give your goblin a simple schedule changing his AI packages. You can tell him where and when to wander or travel. I don't think you could have him do anything complex like mix potions or read books. Just be sure to give him a unique editor ID. Otherwise you could change most of the goblins in the whole world to peaceful fellows. The same goes for AI packages. If you modify one, give it a unique editor ID or you will unintentionally change things all around the world.

One important point I had trouble with, when I first started, was realizing that most things outside of town are in the Tamriel worldspace. If you want to put your goblin right outside The Imperial City, it would likely be the Tamriel worldspace instead of the Imperial City worldspace. If your goblin is in a building, the worldspace is "Interiors."

But this is putting the cart before the horse. Follow roquefort's advice. Good luck!

One slight potential problem with using Creatures in this way is that they are still creatures. If they are attacked by accident they will fight back, and, unlike with NPCs, the `yield' option doesn't work. But if their aggression is set low (as suggested above) they will run off after a couple of bouts never to be seen again :)
