Problems with ATI Radion 9600 Pro

 I just installed the ATI Radion 9600 Pro mainly to get better movement in Morrowind. Got that! And other problems. Most of the ingame loads (doors, boxes, bodies) take 2 or 3 times longer to load. Try waiting for a door for over a minute. Frustrating to say the least. It also takes longer to drink a potion and get back to the action screen and to talk to someone.

Anyone got any ideas for a solution? & don't tell me to put my old graphics card back in. I'm already thinking of that. I have contacted ATI about this, but no response yet.

Thanks.

How's your system? If you have problems of slow load times, you might want to upgrade your memory... if not your processor, but that can be very pricey. If you have a mediocre rig, with an amazing video card, you won't see as big of a difference than if you had a decent rig with a decent card... or an amazing rig with an amazing card. In otherwords, if you don't have the power, your new video card won't do much. Make sure your system is "balanced" in that respect.

another problem might be your motherboard

depending on how much AGP it can support you might only be getting a fraction of what your card is capable of. If your card is capable of a 4x or even 8x AGP but your board only runs on 2X which means you'd only be getting a 64-bit transfer instead of the optimal 126-bit that your card supports. But again, the price for a new motherboard aint cheap, but not overly expensive if you can fork over 150 bucks for the latest.

Like what fox said could also be the memory, how much do you have? I'm running a 256 ddr with a P.O.S. onboard Intel ExtremeGraphics driver and I don't have load problems, but don't ask me about my FPS or water effects or I'll get testy :D

Processor could be a possible culprit but not likely, usually with games you need memory to keep them going, also consider other programs you might be running in the background that takes up memory such as anti-virus program (huge culprit of memory hosing) or internet messengers.

If you can tell me the specs of you comp then it might make the task easier. Personally I've heard from many people who both run with Nvidia GeForce 4's and ATI 9500 + that Nvidia interface with Morrowind specifically is smoother. I'm no expert in this area so you might want to ask a local comp store about this, they might be more knowledgable.

From your post it sounded like that the upgrade was just for morrowind, if so you can get a cheap 100 buck upgrade that will give you all of the perks but much cheaper Nvidia Verto's will give you pretty much what you're asking for and they get up to 4x AGP with 64 DDR SDRAM, not a bad card at all and EXREMELY reliable.

If you have any other question about hardware and software interface i'd be more than happy to answer cause from my experience Tech people tend to blame the problems on software rather than hardware.

Go into your Display settings and make sure AGP is turned on. Should be under the SmartGart heading. My Radeon 9000 came with it turned off, and I had to go in there and manually turn it on, then reboot, to get it going.

Also, run dxdiag.exe and have it test your Direct3D and make sure it doesn't come up with any problems. While your at it, you probably want to get the latest DirectX.

One thing I totally forgot at the beginning, open up the Morrowind Launcher and go to Options. Make sure it has your 9600 set as the adapter and isn't still trying to use the one you took out.

Finally, if you haven't already, get the latest drivers. ATI is constantly fixing and improving their drivers and release updated every few months. Here's the link http://atitech.com/support/driver.html

Good luck. Let us know what how it goes.

 Thanks, Guys. Boohoomoo hit it right on. Had to go into ATI to change. Also had to get a different Via Hyperion driver. Works fine now, after I uninstalled and got MW out of my registration, and installed MW, Trib, & Bloodmoon.

Also, next month, a new motherbord & a 2.8 GHtz Athlon chip.

Thanks again for your help.
