Lockpicking attempts cooldown

I'm working on a crime/stealth mod at the moment where I have made it so that breaking a lockpick exits the lockpicking menu and drains some stamina. Lockpicking gets increasingly difficult as stamina lowers and when below a certain threshold it is no longer possible to even attempt to pick the lock. Judging by what I have already done (and how I have done it) I don't think it would be too difficult to implement your idea.

The first step would probably be to take away the game pause during lockpicking to get that kind of immersion.

If someone could achieve that, that would satisfy all my needs. Patrolling guards and/or monsters themselves would become the limiting factor, so no extra handicaps would be required.
