t3hf4ll0ut
Summer is coming, and that means tons of free time for everyone. Which means tons of free time for modders. Which means tons of Fallout 3 Mods. My goal this summer is to learn to model... simple... just model. What I have in mind is modeling a brand new energy weapon, because I feel the ones now are kind of getting boring. I want to model a new gun, but I have no idea where to start. I've looked at JaySuS' mesh editing tutorial, but I'm wanting to fully customize this bad boy.Not just throw a few vanilla meshes together and call it my own. What programs do I need? I don't mind buying either, but if something is cheap and worth it then sure, throw it at me.Here are some questions that need to be answered: - What program/s will I need?- What should I do first?- Are there any tutorials I could take other then JaySuS'?- Any other things you think I should know. Keep in mind... I'm a newb at modeling. Honestly, I have no idea when it comes to it. I learn fast if I'm motivated, and I'm pretty sure I can get this down by the end of summer. Thanks. Tony the Wookie
Summer is coming, and that means tons of free time for everyone. I would bet that most of the people on here are just as busy in the summer as they are the rest of the year... but anyways, personaly, all I have ever used is 3ds Max 2009 for my 3d modeling, but a lot of people also use Blender http://www.blender.org/ it is free, and would probly work if all you want to do is make a few mods, but Max is the industry standard, and is the way to go if you ever want to break into the game industry (at least I have never heard of any game studio that uses Blender... not even Indie game studios) but tutorials are quite easy to find, just look around on this site or type "build a gun in 3ds Max/Blender" into google

Tony the Wookie
honestly, I havn't got anything of mine imported, im still in the stages of texturing the mod im going to release, but from what I hear it is quite easy, and there are plenty of walkthroughs on that stuff all over this site
t3hf4ll0ut
Thanks again. PS. Would I need zBrush for anything? It looks pretty useful.
Tony the Wookie
You don't need Z Brush, it is more of a ultra high poly sculpting tool, wouldn't be good for a weapon in Fallout. I personaly have never used it. I personally just use 3ds Max and Photoshop
SpeedyB64
Zbrush is great for making fancy normal maps like this:http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5725/69281159.jpgfrom:http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showto...0&start=280 But that's pretty advanced stuff. I would start simple in order to not get overwhelmed. If you can get 3ds max get it, its the best. Its also ridiculously expensive. Once you get a 3d program start googleing tutorials and you should find plenty of stuff. Good luck
genovauk
also it's best to not get tutorials for all sorts of things only for what you need to do. You for axample will need to find tutorials for weapon modeling and some animation tutorials for the way the guns slide kicks back or if it has some other animations. Blender I don't know about but in 3d max which is what I use, plane modeling is good for weapons. luckily for me learning to plane model rather than other techniques out there is that I passed the technique over to do the custom tileset I am currently working on. To summarise : you will need tutorials specific for the type of modeling you are going to attemptpreferably Blender or 3dmaxnifscopetexture editor I use photoshop for most thingsAnd follow the basic tutorials that came with whatever software you wish to use (nothing worse than following a tutorial only for them to say click on a button or apply a modifier and not knowing where it is or what it is) and of course plenty of patience and time, this is not a quick hobby I thought I would be done with my tileset in a few weeks, How little did I know it would take so long. There is a lot involved but just stick with it and goods things will start to happen.
