Morbid_Pathologist
Half life 2 had nice graphics, the shadow/physics were flawless as were the character detail, but compare it to doom 3 and you'll easily find something wrong, doom 3 had more of a atmosphere compared to half life 2, that and the way ID used the lighting was perfect (sometimes too dark), comparing the two is unfair.as is comparing one of them with Halo2, it has to run on a console smooth right?, so their obviously limited to how far they want in terms of details and effects, if it were developed on a PC only, they could go as far as they wanted to, but the x-box had its limitations and being a owner of halo 2, i must say what they managed to do with a console is amazing.Lets face it, we cant have full stencil shadow's projecting off 6 different light sources (not including the lights from explosions and stuff) and full pixel shaded real time reflections off a covernant warriors armor now can we, if the x-box attempted that, be prepared for a slide show, so be grateful for what microsoft/bungee managed to accomplish on a little console :) as for storyline, theres those with great storylines such as silent hill 4 (eraserhead rip off, still nice idea) well...the entire series and planescape torment (theres too many to list). And theres those with horrible storylines but in this case you must take the gameplay into consideration, Painkiller is the perfect example, horrible storyline, infact the writer should be shot for it, but the game was brilliant, simplistic FPS game with a good graphics engine, played the right music at the right time, speaking of which, this is where so many companies screw up, we dont want to listen to ambient music during a intense fight, look at painkiller again, rock (sortof nu-metal in some cases) music during a fight, did it work?, yep, even if you dont like that type of music, it still suited the mood, ive even attempted to listen to rap while playing something like CS and it worked, then i tried to listen to ambient music while playing CS (ulver's "Silencing The Singing") and it didnt work, something that gets you pumped is the way...well...in my point of view it is. but on sidenote, i won an auction for Crusader : No Regret, the guys from the UK, right now, i love that place, because someone was willing to part from such a masterpeice :D
KzinistZerg
I'd like to point out that little storyline dosn't make a bad game all the time; you guys keep quoting Doom III, but I can quote Doom I and II and both the expansions. Frankly, Doom I and II had horrible storylines, as far as details went, but the variety of enemies was intreresting as well as the weapons. Basic point-and-shoot. Still fun and it was released as the very beginning of games like that. Same for Wolfenstein, same for the Heretic Doom II mod. Storyline is not always that important. And Grapics are not always as well; Doom I, Doom II, Heretic, and Wolfenstein were all awesome games... and had enormously bad graphics. ;)
