Vista Ultimate 64bit vs XP home 32bit... Is one better for oblivion?

Hello,

I have a pc with 2 HDD. One has xp home 32bit and the other vista ultimate 64bit. I can just pick what operating system I want to boot into. My specs are this

AMD Phenom quad 3ghz

Gigabite mobo

8 gigs of ddr2 1066

500 gig sata 16mb (vista)

320 gig sata 16 mb (xp)

Nvidia 8800GTS 512 ddr3 ..(way better than the original 8800GTS mine is much better than a 9800gt for example)

Xp only sees 3.25 of my memory. Vista sees all 8 gigs

I installed Oblivion on my Vista HDD also and it works fine.

My question is would there be any benefit to using my vista install to play Oblivion? Also my Xp install has a poo Ton of mods. Could I like .....easy just transplant the data folder to my vista install?

And another Q: I used the Oblivion Tweak Guide site. It has info about allotted memory in the ini oblivion file. Could I increase this more than that guide stated now that I have 8 friggen gigs of memory and am using vista?

Any opinions or help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You already answered your own question. Since only 64 bit can utilize all of your RAM and graphic intense games love RAM.......

Thanks,

What I would like to know is Can Oblivion utilize this extra RAM? And am I going to see any kind of increase in performance?

The reason I want to know this is because installing all my patches + DLC + mods + mod patches + Mod manger is a real pain. If I am not going to see any change I would like to just avoid the work. I have like 200 mods prolly.

Thanks again for your time.

Geez... 8gb. A bit OTT lol?

Normally I'd say XP >>>> Vista for gaming (and in this case, I'm still putting my money on the ol' girl). But with that amount of RAM available, Vista might actually leave some for gaming :P So, if you went with Vista, make sure you install Oblivion to a NON DEFAULT location - otherwise UAC will bite you in the ass (running mods will be painful.. or was it OBSE? I can't remember exactly)

Since I really dislike anything Vista (unless it's a heavily pruned version - all the bloat removed...) I'm going to be a rat and suggest even giving the Win7 RC a try - performance almost XP worthy, with the "pretty" and extra stuff Vista has (it's what vista should have been). Fairly compatible with most games - although UAC might get you too - haven't tried.

tl;dr version: I don't think it'll really matter which one. That video card is going to kick the snot out of Oblivion ;) Just be careful of UAC in Vista.

You know that UAC is easily disabled in Vista, right? For most gamers, one of the first thing they do to customize Vista is turn off UAC. Start > Control Panel > type in UAC > Click on "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off."

UAC....it's just obnoxious that I've got an administrator account and I still get prompted every few seconds. So I disabled it. I would rather be hacked than have to deal with that shiet

8 gigs may be overkill but RAM is just so friggen cheap now ... I was considering a Mobo that could handle over 20 gigs. LOL.

Thanks for your comments. I will try out windows 7. I downloaded it awhile ago and never got around to tinkering with it.

I read somewhere that the official DLC for Oblivion is incompatible with 64-bit operating systems. Some problem with the downloaders. If you're dead set on using the 64-bit Vista (and I'm not too sure about this) you can purchase the DLC in disc form and it works. Here's a link to the thread that I saw it in.
