Mods are too confusing- new computer with a noob owner

Your skyrim isn't fully updated. 0.1.93.0 Is the latest, irrc. Which is why SKSE is throwing the error.

Try going onto Steam -> Right-click "The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim" on the side bar -> Properties -> Updates -> High Priority - Always Update This Game ASAP. Then launch Skyrim (without any mods loaded). Once you get to the title screen, quit and then try launching through SKSE_Loader.

If that fails, Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

And if that fails, I'll have to give you the updated files, which I can't do unless we do so in PM.

Edit: You NEED to verify that Skyrim works A-OK before you install mods. Uninstall Skyrim, then reinstall. Play. Can you make a new game? If yes, quit and then add SKSE. Then launch SKSE_Loader.exe. Does it work?

Yeah.

Also, as a tip, don't use loose files except for scripts and SKSE plugins. When you get a mod, use BSAOpt to compile a .bsa file, selecting the Textures, Meshes, Sounds, etc. folders. Create the BSA file with the name of the plugin.

What a bsa file is, is much like a .zip archive. But when you load a .esp, it's .bsa file is loaded too. When you wish to remove the mod, you only have to remove the .esp file, .bsa file and the added scripts, rather than having to trawl through every single folder and compare with what the mod added.

I seriously recommend using Mod Manager instead of NMM. The only thing that will touch a clean Skyrim install is the core ENB files and SKSE DLL's (the scripts you install just like a mod). You should never have to do a clean install again - since it creates a "virtual" Data directory. Tools which modify mods run on that "virtual" data directory as well.

When I click on the skse patcher then click on skse loader it gives me the please update skyrim error. Is that normal?

Thanks one of my problems was the load order, NMM, was sorting the loader. I had to sort the mods with the games load order program and that stopped the CTDs. There are still many things I don't understand about mods, mainly how mods should be sorted (I've been using BOSS)

Turning mods off and on for different characters. If I have a mod for character A, turn it off and make a character B, and then after a while, return to character A and turn the mod back on will that mess up the mod and the save especially if that mod has progression too it?

Your example is odd. Let me give a better, less convoluted one.

You have mods XYZ loaded. You make character A. You then make a save.

You have mods XY loaded. You make character B. You then save.

With XY loaded, you resume character A. This is bad.

With XYZ loaded, you resume character A. This is good.

You have mods XYZ loaded, you resume character B. This is bad.

You have mods XY loaded, you resume character B. This is good.

Does that answer your question?

yup thanks I downloaded Better Vampires yesterday and it wasn't working right, something wrong with the scripts so I followed the mod authors directions and it works, I think.

Don't ever get Avast. Ever. It'll bog your computer down and wreak havoc with your drivers. I had to do a system restore to get rid of it and make my USB ports work again.

Go get Comodo. Free and far superior.

So Avast is not good? :O I have had Avast for over 2 years, probably much more, and never have had any problems with it..

Comodo you say? If i starting to get problems with Avast or i buy a new computer or reinstall it I may try Comodo :)

Sorry if I was a little offtopic :P
