entity84
Hay Nexusmods, In the recent years I have been investing countless hours learning the basics of full scale game development. In general I have been writing code and designing software for 15 years or so, since the age of 14~, my motivation always was to develop PC games but career and life took me to a bit different path. yet the dream is not lost, and I am here to learn. I was focusing my learning in game development for the Linux operating system, It is the system I develop on daily, I'm doing lots of enterprise web development as my primary job, and I wish all my games to support and work native on Linux. I learned to used SDL 1.2 and later SDL 2.0, OpenGL, Lua, Love, I tested by creating small game prototypes couple of 2D and 3D JavaScript frameworks, tried developing with Unity3D+UnityScript for a while (didn't like it), tried some other open source C++ engines, soon I will get the Leadwerks 3.1 Engine and C++/Lua SDK for the GNU/Linux platform and will start developing with it. I really liked Lua, it's so simple yet can be so powerful. And I know this might sound strange to some of you, but I really admire C++ and would like working mostly with it. I also think Python is very nice. Put all that aside for a moment, This is a modding community, and I'm actually here to learn some modding, although I like and play lots of PC games, I never really got too much into modding modern games, I have been doing some modding in the 90's but that was totally different kind of games, the type that usually fit on one floppy. I figured out, I need to have some decent modding experience before I dive into actual game development. another reason is the fact I won't have really much time to keep learning the core stuff in the coming months, so doing some modding for some time can be a great solution I think for staying on track. What I need is advice of what game should I choose learn to mod. I currently own Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, WOT, ARMA 3, Civ V, and like 100 others on Steam. I'm willing to get anything else that's recommended. I noticed Skyrim has very big modding community, should I go with Skyrim? What do you think will best choice for me, and why? Should I choose a game I personally like to play more then others?
Meihyr
I think choosing a game you like to play more would be a start, as you will be motivated when creating your Mod, and you will want to go see what it's like in-game. Well, that's what happened with me anyway. May be different for others, including you, but I do think starting with the game you like to play more than the others is a good place to kick off. :)
entity84
Ya ... This what I was thinking. I really like playing Skyrim, and I think I could make couple of new mods in the style of SkyUI using SKSE to make some nice interface improvements I would like to have. Later, after I'll get the hangs of it I will try creating some of my own content mod. I'm also wondering if I should be also looking into FarCry3 modding. It's %50 until Jan 2 in Steam but I honestly never played this game, and I'm not so sure I'm gonna like it, but I did read some good things about the FarCry3 modding tool set. Meihyr
Sounds like a good plan. :)I haven't played any Far Cry games, so I don't really know much about them or what they are like. Definitely recommend checking videos on youtube, and reviews and stuff to get more of a scope on it, and the mod section for it here on the Nexus, if you want to see what other people have made for it.
