Hey

I've recently had a huge problem with oblivion

whenever i load up the game, it loads, but not on screen.

Like, for example, if i have a window of Myspace open when i launch oblivion.

I can hear the opening music for oblivion, i can see it in the taskbar, but all i can SEE is myspace.

Even when oblivion is selected in the taskbar

This means i cannot play. At all :(

please help ASAP, as i miss oblivion very much

The solution offered is because running something in the background

is most often the cause.

As you did not mention that you had tried running Oblivion with My Space

turned off it would seem a logical response - not an insult to your intelligence.

Without more details there can be no other response. We are not in the same

room as you, and cannot read your mind.

So, tell us, what have you done to the game recently. New mods ? Changed the ini ?

How on earth is that suggestion insulting your intelligence?? From what you wrote, turning off all background programs and closing any other open windows was my first thought as well. Often the simplest action is the solution.

Seems that trying to recall anything that you've changed, added or removed lately would be the next thing to consider. The more detailed info you give, the better the sages here can help you. Good luck!

please, don't insult my intelligence.

iv tried that, but THEN all it shows is the desktop!!!

its not a problem related to the power of my computer.

I've handled oblivion for about a year with no trouble.

any other suggestions?

Making such a comment to someone that is only trying to help is rude.

That said:

You may be having a problem with background processes.

A Clean boot (a totally reversible process) can help by clearing all unneeded processes, then test the game.

If the game now runs better, you can use task manager to locate offending processes.

I'm sorry if i caused offence at saying u insulted my intelligence, its just that while this may be one of my first posts on this forum, i'm not incompetent with computers.

i would only come to this forum if i had tried the obvious, such as closing all other programs.

Anyways, iv looked into my ini and it says it was modified on the 11/6/09, but i definitely did not go in there at that date.

if anyone could give me a copy of a default oblivion ini so i can see if anything drastic has been modified, it would be appreciated.

but in saying this, i have completely re installed oblivion, and nothing has changed. of course, i have kept my saves and mods, but all default oblivion files have been un-installed and re installed, but i'm still getting the same bug.

as for the clean boot, i've read about it at the link you gave me and i would just like to compare my ini with a default one before i start a clean boot.

even though i know it is 100% reversible.

Thanks for your ideas, please reply ASAP

I think if you delete your oblivion.ini, it will create a default one for you when you run Oblivion. Back up your existing one just in case though.

You could also try lowering your graphical settings temporarily. Make them very low. See if the game functions at low settings, and if so, that may have been the problem. Tweek the settings until you have a good balance.

Another thing you could try is running it in windowed mode. In your oblivion.ini file there should be a variable named "bFull Screen". Change that to 0. Does the windowed mode version have the same problem?

The Oblivion.ini is machine specific. It is set up for your particular computer based on information it collects when you first load the game. If you were to transfer the Oblivion.ini from another computer, unless the other computer was identical there would be problems. That is where all of the info about your graphics card is put. If you somehow made a change that changed some of the vid card settings, or changed the vid card, it could cause what you had. There are several mods that do make changes in the video part of the ini, the one that makes the most changes is streamline. Streamline makes almost constant changes as it adjusts the visual parts of the game to maintain the fps within certain parameters.

Now that you have it working make a back up of the Oblivion.ini. Open it in an editor and save it with a new name (save as) such as Oblivion.aaa Then if it happens again, delete the Oblivion.ini and open the Oblivion.aaa in the editor and save as Oblivion.ini. That will alow you to keep the Oblivion.aaa unchanged as a backup.
