How do I install mods?

I have searched and they all tell me to put them in my data folder, and I have been doing that. But when I download a mod that has the esp, textures, meshes, etc... what do I do with that? I can't just put it in there, because there's already a folder called textures, meshes, I tried doing textures1,meshes1, but I think that's whats causing my red exclamation point thing. Can someone please help?

if you are using a mod that adds something new, clicking "yes" to "overwrite" will only add the files into the folder. where they should be.

 

say you have a mod for a fun gun and the texture is here:

 

fallout\data\textures\funguns4goodtimes\fungunone.dds

 

as long as you dont install another mod that uses that exact name and location "overwriting" the folders will actually just place them inside
