Skyrim Special Edition wont start.

I have happily played Skyrim then SKSE since launch. Currently have a heavily modded skse on my Windows 10 PC and a copy on my laptop with same operating system.

When anniversary edition came out abd Steam auto uploaded AE, my mods largely stopped working, especially the mod UI. I had a recent complete save and deleted the game completely on the comp and copied the steam folder to program x 86, my games folder in documents and nexus mod manager folder in program files. Things worked fine again for some time as long as I started steam in offlline mode.

About a month ago I forgot and started steam while connected to the internet and it downloaded some or all of AE but my SK SE continued to work fine. So I thought I would update steam on the laptop as well to avoid that annoying repair option when starting steam in offline mode. After that I could not start skse on the laptop. Steam is open, I start SKSE with either steam or skse script extender and steam says running. After 45 seconds or so, the usual time for me, then 100% flashes next to SKSE in steam, then it reverts to normal and the game never staRTS.

I have verified the integrity of the files on my laptop through steam 5 times at least. Also deleted and re-copied the game in total, steam, documents and mod manager in program files also like 5 times. Tried the latest skse and AE versions of script extender as well and the same thing. Steam says running for 45 seconds, then flashes 100%, and the game never starts.

I can play Skyrim, as opposed to SKSE on the laptop fine, but special edition with or without script extender, won't complete load.

Thanks in advance for any help.

"AE" (Skyrim V1.6x and above) requires a different SKSE version than Skyrim SE 1.5.97. The game will run in vanilla mode using the Bethesda game launcher if SKSE isn't working, but SKSE dependent mods will not work.

Are you using the appropriate version of SKSE64 for your game version?

PS> SKSE is (effectively) a "game-wrapper and command enhancer", not a game. In prehistoric times, we'd have called it something like a "shell"

So, you're always playing Skyrim, whether launching it with the SKSE "shell", or with the vanilla Bethesda loader.

FYI, 2.0.20 is the last one for 1.5.97. I play 1.5.97 so I'm not sure of the specific SKSE version #s used for AE, but I'm sure they're higher than 2.0.20, so check your main Skyrim folder. The SKSE DLL associated with SKSE64_loader.exe will very clearly state which version of the game (Skyrim) it is for. And just in case, on the off chance, if there's more than one, its the one with the highest value

ex: my game has the file skse64_1_5_97.dll

I Have tried these:

Current classic build 1.7.3: Install via steam - Download installer - 7z archive (readme, whatsnew)

Current Anniversary Edition build 2.2.3 (game version 1.6.640): Download 7z File

Current Special Edition build 2.0.20 (game version 1.5.97): Download 7z File

I then checked my skyrim version through properties on the Launcher. 1.6.640. I thought it would be higher as steam did a major update on skyrim when I was validating the files.

So I downloaded skse from silver lock archive for 1.6.6, tried that.

No change.

Starts off saying it is running, then flashes 100% momentarily then just stops.

Going O/S on Thursday, so wanted to play skyrim while away :-(

I wonder if I/we are approaching this wrongly. Skyrim works. Skyrim Special edition does not. In the past I have got an error messaee when launching from the skse loader shortcut, either in normal or admin mode. I am not getting that error message. But when I launch skyrim special edition by any means, with or without loader, directly from SK SE launcher, steam, nexus mods, steam says it is running but never actually starts.

I am thinking Skyrim Special edition is the problem, not the skse loader. Just a thought.

You have to check all of your SKSE-based mods, as well, to make sure that they match. ( https://modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins ) is a modding wiki that lists matching mod versions for various SKSE iterations. Take a look.

FYI - the update to 1.6.640 changes a lot of stuff that SKSE depends on. Look for Address Library ( https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/32444 ), as it allows the mods to read just the info they need to start.

Also, there are logs in your \Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE folder that may help you find problems.

Yes, SSE could be the problem, and could verify the files again, trying to launch it directly from Steam immediately after the check. But it crashes because of one or more vital changes you have not made to allow SKSE to run. Check the logs.

Also, check the size of your windows page file. Just got off of a thread that found that one that is too small can make SSE CTD.
