Is it even possible to mod it into the game, that is the million dollar question.

I'd even be down for some save file hackery like was done in the Mass Effect games to change appearance.

There's a functional character creation menu, there's a command in the code somewhere to open it. At its most basic all the mod needs to do is put a button somewhere into the game that lets us run that command in the code and we're all gucci.

There might be other complications (like the current creation menu leading directly into the start of the game, for instance) but I'm certain there's a way to figure that out. Also, there's code for changing appearance in the game already in the form of the shapeshift/disguise self spell, so its not as though there's zero precedent for this.

Really, it's just a matter of time until somebody figures out how to mod it in cleanly. A better question IMO is why Larian didn't add the feature themselves - they seem to have accomadated pretty much every other factor of character customisation, including class respec (Something you don't even usually see in tabletop 5e) but didn't for one second think that maybe, just maybe, players would want to edit their characters once they see them in game? Baffling, honestly. They even have an NPC who would be perfect for the job in Withers! It's a no-brainer, so it not being there is the strangest part of all of this.

I don't know, I suspect it's much more complex than that, or it would've been modded in during early access, or added as a feature as several translations and dev diaries suggested it would (it's why everyone thinks the Mask of the Shapeshifter allows you to edit your character - they said in a dev diary that it'd let you change your appearance without having to return to camp, which I suspect was the original plans).

A game as big and with as many devs and features as BG3 is going to have MAD spaghetti code, and I very much wouldn't be surprised if your character's appearance is all stored in read-only fields, or is otherwise inaccessible after character creation due to it's protection level, or coupling. The illusions maybe tell the game to show a different model, but they don't alter your character's base attributes.

We'd have to get an experienced modded who's sniffed around the files to come in and give their 2c to know for sure, but I strongly suspect it'd either require a janky work around that casts a permanent illusion around your character, or for someone to refactor significant portions of the codebase in order for the game to be able to talk to whatever class is responsible for handling character creation.

Yeah, there may be a strong chance that it's not "just" a question of opening console and typing "showracemenu" as you would in a Bethesda game. If it's a fully scripted menu that's not fully connected to the main game, separated in some obscure way, ... merely opening it could be messy.

Or something even stupider: if you can't "prevent" the menu from overwriting your character entirely, or pick what you're allowed to change? It may flat-out reset your entire character to level 1 and no quests done, which would bug the hell out of the game.

Now, that's all 100% conjecture, but... my vaguely educated guess is that no modder has managed to do it because there might be some weird stuff like that? :/

For the love of God... PLEASE... Someone make this mod. I will join the army of people who would pay for this feature... Im in character creation right now and am suddenly paralyzed... the thought of having no way to evolve my character is really freaking me out. Whoever makes this mod... will forever be the hero of BG3
