Pundemic
It's me again with another inane request! Basically, I want to ask about the situation concerning a mod that removes your PipBoy, and leaves the outift underneath intact. I really like the T-51b Power Armor, but the fact that one of the beefy forearm guards is replaced by the PipBoy is annoying me to the max. The closest thing I've found is the "PipBoy Be Gone" mod by forevernomad, and while this mod admirably allows for removal of the PipBoy while still allowing you to access it, all of the sleeved outfits that I tested (including my beloved T-51b) had the area where the PipBoy would be either deformed or completely invisible. I had a quick look around the forum, and I'm surprised by not only how elusive such a mod is, but also how little demand there is for it. People just dig their PipBoys, I guess. Not that I have anything against it, mind you, but sometimes I want my armor to look symmetrical. Would this mod be exceptionally difficult to create? Or is it just that no one has bothered to do it yet?
Baelkin
I'm equally bothered by the PipBoy, but I don't think getting completely rid of it is actually possible without figuring out how to sever the link between the "PipBoy on" setting and what model parts are displayed ingame. Without actually having used the mod, I think the reason the "PipBoy Be Gone" mod only functions partially is that the game still interprets the situation as if the character was wearing a PipBoy. The game models are split such that the left arm can be shown as "PipBoy off" and "PipBoy on" and displays the model with the according pieces, so by removing the Pipboy model, you haven't really told the game that it should use the "PipBoy off" content, which is why you see people's bare arms or sleeves instead of the "PipBoy Off" version of the model that NPC's typically use. So until someone figures out how to make what the models display independently of the "PipBoy on" setting, I don't think you'll see much progess in this department because it will never be really good until that is accomplished. Pax1138
Pipboy removing mods are in short supply, I think, because it's so damn hard to keep the game functioning without it. That said, I think (not sure, not tested), that you can get your armor to show up right by hot-keying it and unequiping/reequiping it while you're not in your pipboy. Like Baelkin said, it has a Pipboyon/Pipboyoff chunk of model, but it actually tests to see whether you have a pipboy and therefore which chunk of model you need when equipping. Thus, even if you're using Pipboy Be Gone, you're still getting the Pipboyon model part because you technically still have it on while you're in it. But if you use the hotkeys while you're just walking around in the world, you won't have a pipboy on, and thus it'll load the correct pipboyoff model parts. I think. Good lunk. -Pax

Baelkin
I've been thinking a bit about this subject while working on other stuff: I don't exactly know how game interprets the models when it comes to deciding what model parts to show in combination with the Pipboy, but if it uses the names of the pieces in the model .nif files to figure out what pieces to display (which the vanilla models lead me to believe due to the uniform naming conventions), you could technically remove the "PipBoy On" NiTriShape, clone the "PipBoy Off" NiTriShape and rename it "PipBoy On" and the game will display the "PipBoy Off" model regardless of whether the PipBoy is worn or not. Repeat this process for any armour that is violated by the PipBoy and you should have a working solution. It's not a very modular design however, and considering that you'd have to do it for every custom model that features normal PipBoy support I would consider it a hack at best. Edit: Bah, stop posting when I'm posting my hackneyed solutions. :P
Pundemic
Heheh, thanks for all the replies, guys. Exactly what I was hoping for! Now I know a little bit more about the whole issue. Also, that "Pip-Boy Invisible" mod looks hopeful, thanks sayouk! I'll definitely give it a try! Don't know why I haven't been able to find it in the past, lawd knows I spent a while looking. EDIT:F*** YEAH! My T-51b is pimpin' now! Haven't run into any problems with that mod so far. Thanks again, sayouk.
