Calbeck
A running theme for people who immediately crash to desktop when trying to edit dialogue seems to be having a Realtek-chip-based sound card while running Vista. Realtek was bought out by another company when Vista was still new. The new company refused to support the sound chips, which are very common on motherboards, especially in factory-built machines like Dell. The 'Vista' drivers are actually modified XP drivers and may not support many of the more advanced audio functions...which is why GECK is crashing, since editing dialogue also opened options to edit sound files. The fix? I went and bought a cheap Sound Blaster X-Fi for $20 used. Disabled my Realtek mobo sound card. Updated all drivers. Annnnnd now GECK is utterly flawless in operation. Booyah. EDIT: Yes, this means that if you are running Vista with a Realtek motherboard-based sound card, odds are you will NOT be able to get a fix for this problem any other way. There simply aren't any up-to-date Vista drivers for that hardware, and you can't get them from the remnants of the Realtek site either -- not even their FTP option works.
