Making a unique variant of a common variant

Just what the title indicates. I copied a record of the combat shotgun for FO3 into a new file to tweak it and make it like a proper shotgun. However, I'm wondering what attributes I need to edit to make my copy into a unique variant so that it will not conflict with the common variants.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also I was hoping I could do it in FO3 Edit.

Sincerely, Kat.

In FO3Edit load the plugin containing the record that you want to copy, in the left hand pane drill down to the record, right click the record to open the context menu, select "Copy as new record into...", change the EditorID, and confirm master additions if necessary. Now back in the left-hand pane drill down to your new record, left click to select the new record, in the right hand pane make your edits, and finally save your plugin making sure that you have not inadvertently made changes to any other plugin.

Ok, so reading that reply, turns out I have been making unique weapons this whole time. Which is odd because when I open my plugin in the GECK it says something about my record not being unique then proceeds to mark it as a duplicate.....

and I can't for the life of me work out what id going on there.

When you copy the record into a new file, copy it as a new item and not an override, and prefix the editor ID with your initials or something (not numbers). If you leave the Editor ID the same, the Geck will complain and rename it to Duplicate.
