OMG Someone please help

Ok, I am new to all this, so please have patience with me and forgive me if I miss something.

I am trying to install mods of Oblivion on the game. Now I am running Windows Vista Ultimate. I am trying to install Rens Beauty Pack, and Blackluster, with some other mods. A few are .7z, which I got the tool for that, some are.zip, which I have that, and others are .rar, which I have that also. But when I try to extract them, I get an error with them all and it brings up a message like User\AppData\Local\Temp, followed by the type of file it is, with symbols, and error. Any idea how I can correct this? I am very confused. Some of these .rar files allow me to take out the files within and directly place into the Data folder, however they do not appear when I go to select them to include in the game upon startup.

I am new to windows Vista, so do you think it is because I have it in my (X86) folder?

UPDATE: Now it is saying it cannot open output file(s) (The list of some files being extracted) when I try to extract into Data Folder of Oblivion. Please some one who knows these things respond. I wish to learn how to correct the problem and really need your guidance.

I would really appreciate the help,

Faust

If you have 7zip you don't need any other archiving programs. 7zip will open other archives including Zip, WinRar, Ace etc.

The best way to get your mods to the correct directory is to extract the files to a temporary folder first. Then copy and paste the files to your Oblivion\data folder. Activate the esp in your launcher...or:

Download OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager). You can create a file called an OMOD straight from the zipped file, most times, and OBMM will install it for you. The instructions are easy to follow. Read the documentation that comes with the file.

I use Windows XP so I can't help with Vista issues.

I do thank you and so grateful, I shall try this now. It is just that I had windows ME before this (yeah both suck and I should have went with XP when I had this computer built, I thought they would improve Vista), and that was easy to use and install things. I thought this would be easier, but even though it is new, seems a lot of complications with programs that were operating with XP. Which I am not sure is a good or bad things, seeing how another windows is already coming out or is out.

But thank you, I shall try this now.

UPDATE: Ok, it has been awhile since I even played Morrowind, but I got the hang of it now. It is appearing in the data file when I start the game to select. Thank you very much for your help. I was forgetting there are files I have to literally take out and put into Data I guess, because that is working. Thank you again very much and you have yourself a great weekend.

If you are using Windows Vista, I would suggest that nearly all problems related to programs and Vista interaction is due to installing your programs in the "Program Files" folder. The solution then is to install all your games and programs outside the "Program Files" folder (try C:\Games).

If you have an (X86) folder, that means you have the 64-bit version of Vista. Still though, my method should fix nearly all of your vista related problems.

P.S. The next version of windows is Windows 7 and it is scheduled for release in August. You can download the 2nd public beta version for free at the moment.

Not to go off topic, but would you recommend I download it? I have a feeling Windows is going to keep pulling this BS until Google or someone else steps up and gives them serious competition. Because think about it, I am sure they make a lot more money doing it this way.

Also, I am having issues with the Rens Beauty Pack. I am seeking someone to show me how they have theirs put in their data folder. I took out the ESP files and put them in the Data Folder exposed, because that enabled me to select it from start up launcher of Oblivion. However, the Elves didn't show up. So I took the character file and put it in Data. Now I do get an elf, but they are too dark to see anything and when I switch around colors, at best I get a dark elf. Plus the hair doesn't show up for the mod. So I am wondering now what folders actually get exposed directly to Data Folder, and if the character folders should be combined or what? LOL I am learning this stuff all over again or perhaps it is truly different than mods for Morrowind.

Since I haven't used Vista or Win 7, I can't answer that question. What I can say is that as far as something as important as an operationg system is concerned, you shouldn't use a beta version of it for anything other than testing or as a demo. Using beta hardware drivers is risky enough. If you do decide to download it, rather use it with Vista in a dual-boot configuration until you are ready to make the move to Win 7.

As for Ren's Beauty Pack, I am having trouble understanding exactly how you installed it. Did you copy any meshes and textures into your Oblivion Data folder? What do you mean by "Character file" and "...what folders actually get exposed directly to Data Folder..."?

Ok, like this: Data Folder> Rens Folder>Meshes and Textures

Meshes>Characters>Male>Female

Textures> Characters>Male>Female

And then they all break into other things.... I let them be, with just the esp in the Data Folder, but nothing happened. So I took the Character Folders and put them directly into Data Folder, from Meshes/Textures, and I got a Character, but not what it is supposed to be.

Just don't take any files out of folders that are called - Ren.

The esp should point to that folder.

Data\Textures\Characters\Ren I don't use Ren, but that is how the folders are laid out.

The version I have is old and has two options in the Ren folder, One is tattooed and the

other not.

That should be all you need.

If the mod does not work this way then put the Ren_MysticElf sub folder in without the Ren folder

- Textures\Ren Mystic Elf. If this works and you want the tattoos then replace the folder with

the one with the tattoos. You may need to rename the file (delete the _tt01)

(that's how my version is named). The version I have is for vanilla bodies, but I gather

there are newer version that work with other body types.

Don't forget to activate the esp. Best done with Oblivion Mod Manager.

Don't expect your character to look like ones you see ss of. They have likely been tweaked.

Read the Read Me from the mod again as well.

You may still need KyneTarse's 'Custom Race Fix as well.

Thanks, I will try that out. LOL You know what? I do have the Custom Race Fix, but I am not sure I installed that yet! LOL I think I did though. I have to go and check.... (Checking)... Yeah the esp is KT Custom Race Fix, what the heck? Ok, let me try it the way you said then. I have the Game of the Year Edition, do you think that makes any difference?

LOL I just realized our names are like the same. I never used BOSSFaust for anything before, just did it at random, because my name is Faustino and I go by Faust. LOL How crazy.
