Just a scream into the void (spoiler in mods)

Let me start by acknowledging, that nobody cares. I know that, but I have to say it somewhere.

I hate mods which only goal is a spoiler. It's usually very small changes to important story elements or other special surprises that are targeted.

Fallout 4 spoilers coming:

I still remember very well a very small mod that changed the son's appearance (not much, just enough to count as a mod). The description said something like "The head of the institute, your son (...)" The change was so unimportant and small that it was incredibly obvious that it was just about the spoiler.

And I hate that like the plague. This happens every game, every time and you can't protect yourself from it. Of course you can do without mods until you have finished the entire game including all the secrets, but then the game is over (for me at least). And that makes mods unnecessary.

Like I said, I know no one cares, but I really had to get this off my chest.

I hope I haven't triggered anyone here. It just annoys me that I have to choose between a spoiler-free (troll-free) game and a modded game.
Have a nice day. :-)

You already answered yourself. Is it anyone's fault but YOURS that you could not simply finish the vanilla game first BEFORE considering mods? But you are of the ENTITLED generation, where everything has to be done to serve YOUR needs, else something is wrong with the world.

Now don't get me wrong, I think common courtesy is a very desirable Human characteristic (and thus political censorship of certain mods that only change the user's own experience is morally indefensible). But places like this are 'hard' places, where a large section of users and contributors wouldn't recognise courtesy if it hit them on the head. They like clout, fighting, taking sides, and power.

To a lesser person, it is an act of 'power' to spoil the fun of another person. Trolling, griefing, swatting, etc. It is all part of 'cancel culture'- censorship taken to the next level. Orwellian in every respect, and dominant in the West today.

Anyway you made some ludicrous comment about mods being unneeded after the vanilla game is finished. Which tells me that in your case, you really are doing it wrong. Spoilers are always irritating, but matter less as the cultural and quality value of the media declines. Beth bumps rock bottom in both metrics. If you care about the 'story' in a Beth game, may I respectably suggest it's time to start reading great literature so you can finally appreciate how far removed from worthwhile Beth storytelling actually is.

I've enjoyed Beth games for the world-building, but story- yuk. You cannot spoil what the author has already made rotten. Here's the generic spoiler for all Beth games- there is no true role playing, and the missions make you the big boss of every faction and organisation you come across. Todd loves Mary Sue in the worst way.

And back to the main point. Starfield is in a pitiful state. Mods will reverse this- moreso than with any previous Beth game. People should learn self-control and patience- put away their copy of Starfield for at least TWO years, and then experience it in all its modded glory. Four years would be better.

Hallo zanity,

And thank you for the time you took to write this answer to my little rant.

I truly never thought that anyone would write anything. Even less so something this long.

Nevertheless, I must reject your nothing, that I am from a “ENTITLED generation”. You can’t know from which generation I am from, and, on those grounds, I reject this comment as a strawman. I also find it funny, that generations as a concept where first create a long time ago to denigrate and mock younger people. Even if there are some legitimate use-cases for grouping people of similar ages together, you have fallen in the trap of the more common use of generation.

Thank you for your agreement, that people can be horrible “monsters” and some thrive on nothing more than ruin the fun of other members of our community. I think we are on the same page regarding this point. The main misunderstanding hails from my very specific and non-changeable point, that mods, which are specifically designed to spoil parts of the story are a bad thing. To be more precise, mod that have no other point to be a so called “troll”. This might never change. Nevertheless it is a pet-peeve of mine and will never stop to annoy me.

On a personal note, for me the fun in those games comes from a mixture of exploration and some storytelling. I concur, that Bethesda game studios do not have the best track record for good storytelling. But this is a red herring. Even if the story is no good, in makes the act of creating a mod just to spoil it no better than a mod for a game with a good story. The point was not “you mustn’t spoil a good book” the point was “Don’t be an insufferable ‘dickhead’ by spoiling someone else’s fun.”

I, like you, enjoy games Bethesda Game Studios for the world building. there is good accordance between our values.

To address your last point, I must agree and disagree with you here. Starfield, like every Bethesda game in the last twenty years, is not in a good place at launch. But it is not as bad as some of the last games like Skyrim, Oblivion or even Fallout 4. I also have high hopes for the modding community.

To address the modding community directly: You guys rock! (Did I use this phrase correctly?). I love your work and you are a blessing to everyone, who likes Bethesda games. Thank you for your fine work and all the dozens upon dozens of hours you poured into those mods. You are awesome!

To end this rather long comment, I must explain why I use some less refined speech in my regular additions to this site. I am holding the strong opinion that you have to adjust to your surroundings. Language is a tool, which main usage is to communicate with other people. You have to adjust your tools to achieve the best result. So, I try to not sound like I have a “hardware store worth of sticks up my ass”. I Think this is a worthwhile trait to have.

So again, thank you for reading and have a wonderful day.

Edit:

I forgot to explain why I am against the notion, that you can finish the game and install mods afterwards. For me the game is over, when I saw "everything". MY definition of “beating the game” is therefore “seeing everything, that is worth seeing”. Therefore, it makes no sense to first finish the game first and then look at mods. Because there is no point in playing a game you have, by your own definition, beaten. Or it is obviously very boring. And this defeats the point of a game.

Edit 2: grammar

Hello DSLmaster,

First let me say I have been playing PC games since the orginal DOOM (the three 1.44 MB floppy disk freebe on Compuserve) and after playing through the first three missions - many times - decide to plunk down theh 19.95 USD for the complete game.

Mods and spoilers have been around since then.

Sometimes I get annoyed with spoilers however my main objective or mission is to beat the game, the AI, and the programers.

I played this game once with out checking any web sites for answers for a couple of missions, one I have to revert back to a previous save to fix the mistake that had all of the UC after me (and Barret, he shot Petrove)... A spoiler would have told me what to avoid - I did finish the mission and went on, finished the first play though.

What I think with most modders (I have gave modding a shot - it didn't end well...) have played the game enough to understand what they want to do, and some may give out a little too much information, sometimes I do get a little irrated with finding out something before I have reached that point in the game but I don't throw in the towel and stop playing.

If it wasn't for the great people here and othe mod sites then Skyrim or Fallout would have dropped off the internet like Call of Duty and Farcry. Orginally these were great games but the franchise went off the deep end with more and more of the same.

So now we wait for Bethesda to release a Creation Kit so the great people that make mods have the tools need to make a good game better.

At this time the only thing I have done to the game are a few tweeks to fix some of the annoyances with the game but haven't seen any thing here that would actuallly fix the few things I think need fixing...

One thing I will point out is that some web sites that give a walk through come in handy when you get stiuck on a quest and can't find a way out...

The idea (which is lost on some people) is to have fun!

:)
