Someone PLEASE figure a way to set thrusters to a separate axis.

So I understand Starfield is not a true space sim. It is a massive game in the classic Bethesda formula with a space sim coat of paint and a few elements worked in (some which do nicely).

I love space sims and love Bethesda games, so this has been a blast. I have hundreds of hours playing Star Citizen in it's eternal monetized-alpha development cycle (it will never release because they make a lot of money this way. Some ships are thousands of dollars in real world money and people buy them). I'm sure there have to be plenty of other SC vets in here, but to those that aren't they ripped SO many design elements straight off star citizen.

Now to the MAIN point, the one thing this game is severely missing is better controls on the PC side. Bethesda used to show us more love than this when it came to PC exclusive bindings, especially like back in the Oblivion/FO3/NV era.. so WHY can we not have a separate axis for thrusters. Even though it would be lovely I can forgive no directinput support.

I am a flight/space sim FANATIC just as much as I am on of Bethesda games. and even though I don't have thousands dumped into a control setup like some, I have the X56 which is a decent HOTAS and Saitek Rudder pedals. I was making due flying/general traversing with a gamepad then fighting with kbm, but I just CANNOT resist temptation to make SF feel as space sim-like as possible. The spaceflight, controls, ships, and space combat in SC are WORLDS apart. If you have fun with the spaceflight in this and have a beastly PC the small pledges to check it out are very cheap.. Like $30.

Sorry for all the background and explanation, that is just what I do. TLDR part starts here:

For the first time I have decided to mess around with x360ce. I feel like I could have a pretty decent experience on my hotas EXCEPT how they have thrusters limited to an alternate flight mode by holding RB. If there was SOME way this could be a separate input, OR the x360ce software or one like it could let you bind a modifier key to the axis so the game thinks you are holding RB when you move that axis. I have not found a way so far.

I am getting pretty frustrated from ship combat. I am getting torn apart when in SC I feel a lot more capable. A big part of the problem is the size and movement of the ships. For those of you familiar with SC I fly an Anvil Arrow.... So the combination of the AWKWARD controls when I have more sticks and axis in front of me than I can count combined with all ships handling like a Freelancer at best is just tearing me up. I can get used to the latter if I could just SOMEHOW get thrusters on their own independent axis without needing a modifier key in RB or space.

I am going to keep tinkering with it and see if I can figure out a way on my own. I think it may need some kind of mod... but IDK. I made a castle in the Skyrim editor once, but other than that I just play the games and download the mods so you guys tell me lol. Have a great day!

I just wanted to add, I got it working just settling for my hotas as an xbox controller. At least I get to use it. I REALLY do hope some mod comes in the future that really expands the keybinds for various things when it comes to piloting. Primarily the thrusters getting their own axis.. but it would be cool if all the movement keybinds could be split up and bound separately. I want my pedals to handle strafing side-to-side and up and down, rotating the stick to handle flight rotation, and then stick movement for yaw and pitch.

Surprisingly using a hotas throttle for walking/running is NOT BAD! I have perfect and easy control over walking speed and it isn't hard to center it. Following NPCs should be a lot less awkward and look a lot more immersive like this. I may only use my keyboard and mouse for combat and menus lol. If I am running through a city I can just do so at "full throttle" leaned back comfortably piloting my feet using a flight stick lol.

Maybe a future DLC Bethesda will expand on spaceflight and incorporate more control options for PC users.

I don't know why they even bothered releasing this on Xbox tbh. 30 fps is awful. Makes any modern title feel like a 360 game..

I wanted to come back to this with one last update if anyone with a similar setup as mine is doing research. Using X360CE I actually found a stick-only config for the X56 I like even more. It doesnt take long to get tired of having the throttle as the left stick. I'd bump it on the ground and move when I didnt want to.

I currently have

Main Trigger - RT

Thumb Trigger - LT

Pinky Button - Y

POV Hat - Dpad

Top Pickle Button - RB (for quick, on the fly use of the thrusters... which I think is the way they are more intended as opposed to an ordinary part of steering your ship as I thought at the time of my initial post)

Top Right Button - Left Stick Click (for boosters)

Trim Hat Up - LB (Scan/Photo mode)

Trim Hat Left - View button

Trim Har Right - Menu Button

Using the analog forward and back as the left stick Y axis for throttle and stick rotation as the X axis for rolls.

X360CE makes it very easy to tweak.

Still, if someone figures out a way to make a whole hotas setup work like in a space sim you would be my hero lol.
