Thor.
Hello i was looking around for a decent Sound card for my Ear candy listening needs. I am planning on getting a proper sound card this time around, sense i have the room to do so now.  I will not use On board sound because two it produces interference from the motherboard. 3, On board from HDMI audio from video card actually reduces fps, and the temps increase by 10c to the video card on idle.So my goal is to get one of the best sound cards on the market, Can anyone please help me, Asus is out of the question sense it requires a hdmi audio source for it to work via video card audio source. I would prefer one with 5.1 tosllnk out if possible  New Updated specs Windows 7 pro 64bit OEMIntel Viper extreme ram 1860mhzram for greater detail in linkhttp://www.patriotmemory.com/product/detail.jsp?prodline=5&catid=34&prodgroupid=239&id=1286&type=1 Trust me, brand naming electronics for specific hardware is bogus.Asus Sabertooth 990fx v1 brand naming fro Motherboard does matter, socket ranges,Phenom fx 8350 4.30ghz oc turboGTX 780 ti gigabyte Windforce Edition 3 fan cooler1000watt Antec psu modular sli ready. again bogus lolSamsung 500gb Evo SSD Crucial m5 480gbSeagate Momentus SSD hybrid drive 500gb24inch Asus 144mhz 3d ready monitor G-sync ready. kalikka
Sound Blaster ZxR and Xonar STX. But if you don't use the analog outputs you are just wasting your money. Xonar DSX has DTS encoding and Xonar DX has DDL encoding. Sound Blaster Z (OEM) has DDL+DTS. Edited January 14, 2014 by kalikka
Thor.
Good to know  , i need that to hook up my receiver properly. Digital hdmi is out of the question, so that would be my best option. The Xonar STX does have digital spdif which is nice, but i would like to go Toslink if it was possible. But the zxr has a daughter board specifically fro Toslink and analog. It might be a buy down the road. I would be only using the Daughter board, sense that's all i need if it does support 5.1. http://www.soundblaster.com/products/sound-blaster-zxr.aspxI would like a cheaper model though then the xzr if its possible. Sound and compatibility does matter. thanks for the help  keep'em coming. Edited January 14, 2014 by Thor.
kalikka
The STX has both coaxial and optical...And ZxR daughter board won't work without the mainboard. If you are only getting the soundcard for digital connection, anything with the proper encoding support for optical is "best you can get". Thor.
Okay that would take up two extra pci e slots, which i would like to reduce. My last request would be a cheaper slimmer model if possible, I may have to get that in the near future. I goes its the zxr...Hey what about these models... http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7769071&csid=_61 Asus Xonar Phoebus http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8202122&csid=_61 The recon 3d http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1766718&csid=_61 the Sound Blaster Z 5.1 http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7769070&csid=_61 Edited January 14, 2014 by Thor. kalikka
I would recommend the Sound Blaster Z. It has optical in/out like the ZxR. Can't really help more before knowing what audio gears you are plugging to the soundcard. The OEM version of the Z can sometimes be found as low as 60$. Thor.
I'm plugging in a Pionner HD receiver 7.1 1000Watt, with a pair of Boston Acoustic speakers, one of the best makes for bookshelf speakers around. If that was what you where wanting to know??Sense toslink is limited to 5.1, i think i will go with the "Z" The setup i have deserves the best. The Z is on sale woot, i have to pick me one up soon. Edited January 14, 2014 by Thor.
kalikka
The Z should get the job done nicely. Keep in mind that the Zx models volume knob only affects the headphones plugged into the ACM (the knob thingie).
