Dragon Age: Origins - memory leak

I used to play this game way back in the day and i used to mod it very heavy too adding tonnes of quests dungeons and what not. What got me off the game was the memory leak. I know it could be slowed down using the 4GB patch back in the day but did anything change since then? The game would be unplayable when i got too many mods and not because it crashed but because of the leak.

Has the memory leak been resolved some how or are there any patches fixes or mods to further prolong the gaming? I would love to mod and play the game so if you have any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

No. The engine memory leak hasn't been addressed by BioWare. (The most recent patch for the game was 1.05, in 2011, and at that time was represented as being the final patch.)

There are, however, some other things that can be done to mitigate the instability of the game.

  • Using a Windows compatibility mod (like Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7) can help.
  • Avoid hi resolution 'retexture' mods; the engine cannot handle them. (mods with heavy background scripting can also be problematic.)
  • Turning off any overlays programs (such as the EA/Steam/GOG in-game features, or screencapping programs like Fraps) will help.
  • Forcing the game  to use DirectX 9 can also help, as can developing a habit of saving periodically and reloading that save before continuing.
  • And some folks swear by limiting the number of cores the game runs  on.

I do all of the above, sans the core limit, and my game runs without any issues whatsoever... a steady 58-60 FPS, no crashing, no lag, with approx. 100 DAzip mods installed, and close to 8GB of files in my override folder... not sure if that qualifies as tonnes of mods, though.

I did most of those back in the day but I also had a much weaker machine perhaps that will now be the game changer. In terms of mods I had anywhere between 280+ to up to 450. i would spend about a week just downloading all the stuff. Putting together the mods and making them work was much more fun for me than playing the game although i must say I completed the game fully over 30 times.

Thank you for the reply. Its a shame this didnt get fixed with time. I heard rumors that a remaster is in the works apparently. that might be fun.
