How to edit and apply a playable character's face model GR2 file?

Hi,

I want to edit a playable character's face (one of the faces shown in the character creation interface) model. (Personally, the default ones are too ugly to play a second time)

I've installed Multitool, ExportTool, and the plugin for Blender 3.6, and successfully imported, edited, and exported a character's model GR2 file (for example, ELF_F_NKD_Head_A.GR2).

But I don't know where to place the file to affect the game, and I'm not sure what GR2 file I should edit. (My Google search failed)

It seems that overriding a file is possible without building a mod, but I'm not sure.

Please let me know the file locations.

Thank you.

Hi you don't have to overwrite excisting heads, you can make your own seperate mod that you can install like any other mod with the bg3 mod manager, i used this template https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/3426

It has instructions in every folder and it very easy to use! i made two head already with it 🙂 besides the .GR2 head you will also need its base.GR2 tho and the textures. In this template there are already textures and the base.GR2 but they are all for raphaels head lmao. I just used the texture files and the base.GR2 from another female elf head mod i found on nexus cus they were already compatible with my head 😄 saves you time... but download this template and check out the generated folder than you will see what i mean by base and textures 🙂

If you wanted to just replace ELF_F_NKD_Head_A.GR2 without building a whole mod out of it, you can create a replacer by saving ELF_F_NKD_Head_A.GR2 under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data\Generated\Public\Shared\Assets\Characters\_Anims\Elves\_Female\Resources\ or wherever your equivalent Generated\Public folder is.

Even if you want to build out a full mod, tossing in the GR2 as a replacer for testing purposes speeds up the workflow when making a face mod (it is also FAR easier than making a full mod). Use https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Modding:Head_Models to get the names of other head models you might want to save it as a replacer for (https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Modding:NPC_Head_Models gives you the same for NPC heads). You can use the multitool to get the locations/names of textures and rigs/skeletons as well, if you customize those. If the ears are unchanged, and especially if you aren't changing the textures, I would stick to leaving it as a replacer for ELF_F_NKD_Head_A.GR2

Although texture replacements can be made similarly to mesh replacers.
