AlgernonZlaw
One of the most popular mods for Baldur's Gate 3 removes (technically, greatly increases) the limit on party size. That's unsurprising, since having to leave companions at camp for no in-story reason can feel frustrating; and who wants to miss out on fun character interactions because of that weird artificial maximum? But adding more characters obviously increases the party's power. Cranking up the difficulty is one way to compensate for that, but it would be better, in my opinion, if the game automatically adjusted to the larger party without needing to be manually reconfigured by the player. And, while increasing or improving the number, stats, special abilities, and/or tactics of enemies is one potential way to do that, there's a more elegant solution. In Dungeons & Dragons, experience points earned by a group are divided up amongst that group's members. BG3 could do that too. Multiply XP by 4 and then divide by the number of party members, and a party of 4 remains as normal, but a party of 8 needs twice the XP to level up. Similarly, the amount of camp supplies required to take a long rest could be increased to [party size]/4 times the normal amount. (When first playing, I was surprised to find that camp supply use doesn't already scale with party size. XP is pretty abstract, but food is fairly concrete. You plus 3 companions ought to consume 4 times as much as just you!) With those changes, adding another companion to your party would still be purely beneficial in the short term, but over the long term the increased costs of leveling and resting would counteract the benefit of having more bodies to throw at the game's various challenges. At the same time, these same adjustments would also serve to make the game easier for solo player characters and parties of 2 or 3! Does anyone else think that those changes would be a good idea?
