Vortex version - 1.11.7
Game - Skyrim original release (so not special edition, anniversary edition or vr) from Steam
Mods - picture below

Steps already taken - tried creating a new folder in (C:)programfiles(x86)>steam called "mods" and then a new folder inside called "skyrim mods". I wanted this to be my staging folder because it would be easy to find compared to hunting down the files for skyrim.

I cannot recreate the error message I got. I even restarted my pc but to no avail. It's impossible to get vortex to give me the "warning, stage folder not marked correctly!" message again.

You need to change the staging folder in Vortex (Settings -> Mods). Do not just create a new folder and copy everything over manually. Vortex needs to make the "__vortex_staging_folder" file. That's why you received an error and cannot use your mods. You did not tell Vortex to use the other folder, so it has no idea what you did when you cut all the mods out.

Also, you really should not make a folder inside an existing application folder like Steam to do this. Why not just use the default staging folder location? You can always open the staging folder by right-clicking on any mod in the mod list in Vortex and selecting "Open in File Manager".
