Child will not come home no matter what I do - cannot adopt others?

I don't like posting on these forums, but I've hit a dead end.

I adopted Alesan in Dawnstar, came back home after a couple in-game days and he was not there. When I moved to him in console, he was still in the inn in Dawnstar - would say nothing but the standard 'I'll meet you at home'.

Since then, I've tried resetting him, resetting the adoption quest, physically moving him to my house (Breezehome, if it helps) - nothing. I spent an evening loading up an old save (pre-Alesan) and reenabling all of my mods, one by one - none of them appear to be the issue.

I can no longer adopt children after adopting Alesan, apart from, oddly, the orphanage, as I can no longer tell them that I have a house for them to live in (of which I have two). I have no idea what could be causing this. It's driving me up the wall. If anyone has ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Did you complete the Innocence Lost quest, and get the note from Constance telling you that the orphanage children are available for adoption?  IIRC, Multiple Adoptions will not let you adopt more than two kids if you do not complete that quest first.  There are a couple of faction changes you could make in console while focused on the kid (Alesan, in your case) to try to reset his faction.  I thought that I had them saved, but can't find them.  My experience has been, once it is broken it stays broken, especially if you adopted a kid before completing the quest WRT Grelod and Constance.

Oh, good. I did get that (hence being able to adopt from the orphanage) and while I can't imagine updating his faction is going to do anything, I'll try it. Thanks!

Maybe check/search the comments on the Multiple Adoptions mod, or search the forums here for comments on Multiple Adoptions.  I do not remember where I saw it.  There were several steps to the process.  They didn't help me (I hadn't completed Innocence Lost), but you may have better luck.
