Editing existing mods to change what is replaced

So, there are plenty of mods which conflict with one another, either due to them using the same pakchunk or replacing the same outfit/face/hair/etc. I was wondering how I can unpack the mod files and edit the pakchunk that is used or what is replaced in the game. Which programs would I need for this?

I realise this forum isn't very active, so I will be doing my own research as well, and if I find out how to do this before someone replies, I'll give an update
