game keeps freezing every couple of seconds

hi! i recently started playing nv again and have been playing for a couple of days now. but randomly my game just started having huge spikes of frame drops. I've downloaded common fixes like viva new vegas (minus the stuff that changes direct gameplay). yet nothing seems to have fixed it. the audio of the game gets weirdly buggy too, it used to freeze everything beyond music and ambience but now even that freezes before resuming when the game comes back.
