RoNin1971
If your new to the game, I would personally recommend nothing but a few "improvements" and/or bugfixes. Stuff like 'load accelerator' if you have long loading times (especially true for SSD's) and the unofficial patch, for fixing a number of bugs. Maybe, just maybe, "everyone's best friend" as Dogmeat was at one point in development meant to be an 'extra', not using the companion slot. As mentioned before, if you get deep into settlement building, "place everywhere" is a must have qol mod, sparing you a lot of frustration. That way you will experience the game as it was meant to be, without some of the frustration. After finishing the game, you know what parts you like and which you don't and want to change (mod) and why/how. (how = the way it works/behaves etc. not how to create a mod for it) ...but that's just my 2 cents.

Start from those categories Up at a mod page, Mods / Mod categories / Crafting - home settlements / New Lands / Player settlement / Quest and adventures / Sim Settlements and transfer settlements can cause problems to your game. Also most of overhaul mods and add new textures. Finally i don't think there is any unofficial mod, can fix any bugs. Use the F4SE utility, only if a quest mod or some other mods, you really like, need it. That's all. Use the NMM community edition https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/305 mod manager
VaultHuman
You can check also at the posts section. Many times the author of a mod, write something and this is with a red border. if you do a right click with the mouse and open link to a new tab, you can see if that mod author make extra mods, you can choose if you like one of them. There mods, rebuild settlements with all new way -no transfer settlements mods- so you don't have to spend time and try to find materials, to build houses, furniture and other stuff. i forgot this mod Robot Home Defence so you can build many kind of robots, if you have all the 3 stars at this perk. You can try to find mods, by file size or endorsements. By file size, all the best mods are at the top place. if you want to build unlimited stuff at any workshop left click with the mouse there open the console ~ and type setav 349 100000000000 setav 34B 100000000000 getav 349 getav 34B hit enter and close the console ~ if you have problem, get a workshop, because you get the message, need to clear the enemies from location click to the workshop, open again the console ~ and type setpv ownedbyplayer true setav 33c 1 hit enter and close the console ~ Because of the limit of 255 mods you can at the load order of the mod manager you like and choose, not all esl mods don't cost space. So you need to decide, what mods, you really want. Play quests, explore new lands, find new interiors, build settlements, have many companions. That's all. i hope all that helps. 363rdChemicalCompany
@ Vaulthuman: While I do not agree with many of the components of your list for various reasons, (mostly I feel they involve overpowerd buffs and/or take away from the lonely post-apoc poverty vibe) , I applaud the effort you put into your posts, when the rest of us were being a bit lazy. This is being an enthusiastic forum member who cares about his fellow posters, means. PS: For a 5000hr + player who wants to mix things up I read your list with interest, some of which I had not seen and will check out. Some of those mods listed, such as Better Settlers*, Homemaker expanded settlements, Tales of the Commonwealth*, AWKCR, Depravity, Fusion City, Remnants Bunker I use on some playthroughs myself. Those I find appropiate for new users I marked with a *

Well there is one more txt for money - caps, but i don't think, you want to use something like that. Maybe is good only to build many of those slot machines, because every of those, cost 500 caps. That's all. Enjoy Fallout 4.

fraquar
My only suggestion, without knowing what you want or how you intend to play the game - is this: Perchik71 In-Game Mod Explorer. (a modernized version of the original Dave's Mod Explorer). My guess is you are going to be doing some testing of mods to figure out what you want - and this mod will let you grab items from mods with the user interface. Weapons, armor, attachments, ammo, etc. Go to any workbench to configure an armor or weapon any way you want to test it - before committing to it. Not sure which of the 1/2 dozen or more MP5 mods to choose from? Load 'em all - grab them in game and test them in whatever configuration you want.
