If you recruit three followers and go on one dragon hunt, that's it for blades. You can use follower framework to use one as another warrior with you.

Lore says, Thalmor are actively hunting blades. Sooner or later, they WILL find out about sky haven temple.

One follower Illia is now fully equipped with armor, amulets, rings, and weapons made from 100+ blacksmithing and 100+ enchanting. One a warrior from kyne's grove and another stealth from whiterun. They are equipped with enchanted and improved armor. I've taken Illia on mission to grab another word of power and one more. I'll give the others better weapons as the game progresses.

Lydia, me, and them, could hold off decent force of Thalmor. However, if they attack in large enough numbers, like in the great war, sky haven temple would overwhelmed. Less, if Lydia and myself wasn't around.

There are lots of potential blades around skyrim. A mod to this quest or next quest to keep recruiting blades with no limits, making them all essential. Clear out the forsworn. Expand sky haven temple to be a complete blades base with kitchens, enchanters, blacksmithing tools, more rooms for recruits.

Another potential quest, talk to the empire, depending on how skyrim's faction war goes, some deal to have the empire leave you alone. White Gold Concordant treaty has to taken into account. It's politically complex, but would be fun for someone to make.

After the war, the blades have gone into hiding. You get missions to track down and recruit these blades.

At some point, you get intelligence that the Thalmor have found the base and planning a large scale attack.

FYI, another topic explains why I can't mod yet.
