subaverage Posted May 17 Posted May 17 (edited) If cowardly settlers works as 363rdChemicalCompany describes I could like the idea. Having two groups of settlers. The one that runs the settlement like traders, farmers, doc, hair stylists, etc.. This group would neither be trained in combat and has no relating equipment (except perhaps some basic skills) and the other group the defenders. Armed and armored to the teeth and supplied by the other. The question would be what happens when the defence falls. I have walled all my settlements and use a more attackers mod. I my case settlers don't clip through walls, but might use doors. The castle is not being attacked so I don't know whether it would be different there, but perhaps the ambush kit changes behavior. Its a lot of fun to give great gear to your settler guards and watch them actually make use of it! I even put the Guards into all my spare power armors on purpose and equip those particular guys with some of the best weapons I own.

SKK Settlment attacks allows you to have attacks on any settlement even the ones , such as the Castle, that dont get random attack in the Vanilla game. My Castle is a fortress with ten (!) Power Armor equipped guards plus another 5 or 6 guards with other good gear. The Power Armored guards all have heavy weapons such as gatling lasers, upgraded miniguns, etc etc I had attacks with up to 200 Supermutants! I also use Better Settlers, with mortality turned on but only for my males, in exchane they are now Level 40. The females are protected and come from Commonwelath Captives, and other mods, ensuring they are attractive, but it keeps them at Vanilla game settler level of 2. So its extra important for me to have them not run into the fight. 1
NeinGaming Posted May 17 Posted May 17 With SKK Combat Settlers you can also make them mortal easily (and much more). I tend to end up patching everything manually over time, and the way I'm going is that non-unique settlers are mortal and fight with varying degrees of confidence, while protected/essential NPC, settlers or not, are cowardly, with very few exceptions. 1 1
Deshebist39 Posted June 21 Posted June 21 I always equip my settlers well. All of them. With the best weapons possible. (Yes, I spend a lot of resources and time on this.) I always try to give my settlers armor. The level depends on the location. (Far Harbor - only heavy or the best durable metal or combat armor. ) I ignore light leather armor and recycle it into components. But weapons are more important. A large crowd of well-armed settlers will kill any (ANY!) enemy in a matter of seconds. And I've almost stopped assigning guards — at least.
