Rykoth Posted May 16 Posted May 16 I realize this is not popular for some folks but STOP allowing AI mods, particularly when it comes to dialogue. Not every voice actor is going to say something, but many have. And still some of yall don't care. They're on strike right now because they don't want their voice used in AI. So can we stop allowing AI when it comes to stealing voices? PLEASE?
zloybelka Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Maybe, adding some crowdfunding functionality to Nexus to pay those voice actors and make those voiceover mods possible then? /s
Kregano Posted May 17 Posted May 17 There's a really obvious use case for AI generated voice mods, and it's people who want to stream games that are text heavy, but have minimal voice acting. Then there's the folks who need a voice line or two to make a voice pack work, because they can't find an appropriate line for whatever from the source material. Then there's the really unfortunate cases where the VA has passed away. Obviously, it'd be great if people could find soundalikes or just get the original VAs to do the job, but there's a lot of reasons people may choose to use AI to generate voices, and considering that most people who mod are doing it for free, it's not surprising that some of them are going to use AI because they don't have the money to pay for actual people to do it. 3 1
WickedPepega Posted May 17 Posted May 17 AI generated VA is completely fine by me though... Sometimes from what I see around, VA's are just acting up and then devs have to re-hire a VA to re-record lines in future updates so the voice would match or they "kill" the character which can disrupt a story. I dont fancy reading text with some music in the background but having AI voices is good enough. The main advantage is indeed that its far cheaper than hiring a VA... Mainly cuz some VA's get paid and done which is the best case scenario, but some VA's need to be on call whenever the character needs more lines and the VA is still paid during that period in between updates. Perfect example is ZZZ and Genshin Impact where they had to re-record hundereds of lines cuz a few of their VA's got mad and either wanted more money or just started to protest against some stuff so they got fired and to keep the voice over normalized, devs had to re-record loads of lines from story all the way to simple combat voice lines where it was needed the most... So with that being said, AI is perfect to create a voice for a virtual character. We technically already have such voices for many years (aka Hatsune Miku) which yes, she has her voice synthesized from a real person and heavily edited but its still, not a real VA whom is singing and dubbing Miku... I would be pro if all games had AI voices cuz it would open a brand new window into how gaming is viewed and how immersive it is when you aint hearing the same 5 voice lines over and over again duting combat but have 100+ of them AI generated... Making a custom voice with AI is also quite easy so you dont even have to use real "VA's" for such task but you can record your own voice and just synthesize it and tweak it to fit 100's of different characters.
Rykoth Posted May 18 Author Posted May 18 I think you guys are missing the point. If a voice actor is on strike because they don't want their voices being touched by AI? You probably shouldn't modify their voice to make it sound like "oh its Shadowheart but its an Orc." The point is a lot of professionals do not consent to having AI use their voices. That's why this should be not allowed IMO. I'm not for AI in general, but if an artist DOES consent, that's their choice, and therefore, have at it, go hog wild. But I'm seeing so many mods alter the voices of characters in various games to their own ends, when those voice actors and actresses explicitly are anti-AI. 1
zloybelka Posted May 18 Posted May 18 And here I thought, they were on strike because they want to get paid and all that (continuing to get new offers and not being replaced by voice-over generated from their old voice samples). And since we're talking about modding, how many voice actors were getting paid for voicing modded content to start with? So, kinda either Nexus suddenly implements the No AI voices rule and a sound plan to get the real VO actors on all your mods (and those kind of mods trickle elsewhere, while the strong-willed and principled users stop downloading them altogether) or this kind of talks gets no one nowhere. Also, is it voices only? Maybe some game devs or other find stuffing Shrek and Thomas the tank engine in their game demeaning too? Not even mentioning all those explicit mods.
showler Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Nexus Mods released a statement regarding their policy on AI voice mods quite a while back. A policy they came to based on consideration of a number of factors. Notably, banning AI voices inevitably led to the conclusion that they had to ban people using software to re-cut existing audio to re-purpose it and also the fact that free mods do not interfere with a VA's employment opportunities.
