Please revert the changes, the Icons/Game pictures previously were often superior, extremely so with Skyrim SE, Fallout 4, Oblivion and Morrowind.

Top Line - New

Bottom Line - Old

Witcher 3 and Mount and Blade 2 are also a downgrade, but not nearly as bad.

OG Skyrim, Fallout NV, Cyberpunk 2077 are well done and don't feel like a downgrade to me.

We've updated the Fallout 4 one since your screenshot, however these new images are the official game artwork used by the game developers (you should recognise them from Steam!)

What is it you prefer about the old images?

I'm not the OP, but I would much prefer to see a cool guy in armor than a box cover.  NM HAD the best website in the world and you seem to want to make it as generic as possible now.

What they probably want to avoid is inevitable confusion amongst newer users when there's an Oblivion and an Oblivion Remastered and a Fallout 3 and a Fallout 3 Remastered and a Skyrim and a Skyrim Special Edition and so on.  Box cover images tend to have text and more distinct images whereas a helmet can be confused a lot more easily.

Fallout 4

Pretty clear that this is an icon for Fallout 4.

Steam is completely irrelevant for Oblivion and Morrowind as well as many other games, so no, I don't recognise it from Steam, I don't even have an account.

What is it that we prefer in the old images? Well, let's see... Colour, detail, immersion, visibility, art, design, creativity, oh, and they've got people in them! Overall much better representing the games, although may be not "what the developers wanted". They didn't "want" any of the stuff that's in the mods hosted here either, by the way. 😉

I don't disagree that some of the game artwork is distinctly lacking. I'm definitely open to changing them.

Our designers have used the official artwork as the point of reference to reduce the "cognitive load" for many users, particularly new ones, to map the game they own on Steam/GOG/etc to the game section on the website.

In the example of Fallout 4, it always was the helmet (I have a physical Xbox game case to prove it!), but I think they changed it to the PipBoy for the Next Gen update - or maybe the GOTY version.

I suggest returning NM to the best looking, most engaging, creative, customized website that it used to be.  Adopt a "survival of the fittest" attitude.  If one cannot find their game on NM because the icon is not an exact match to external game selling platforms, I don't think one will be capable of figuring out modding either.

That comes across incredibly gatekeep-y to me. If we can remove any distractions navigating the site, they can use more of their brain power for modding itself 🙂
