Hey everyone, I have been modding skyrim and have been using the collections feature to back up my mod lists. With the Nexus Mods App coming I want to have one of these backups ready to make the transfer over. Unfourtantely whenever I try to make one I get the issue in the title, with the reason being that my selected game is invalid. I am on the latest version of Vortex.

I've run into this a few times as well but have always been able to somehow deduce what problem is/was by comparison with prev

Are you getting any error report or anything else besides the rejection notice? Maybe show a pic of invalid game report.

Sometimes it shows, though other times it doesn't - which can be frustrating

A few times I needed to reset collection.json by removing all and then re-adding (should retain workshop metadata).

Deleting collections didnt work sadly, and I haven't been able to find an error report too.

I feel like I should add that for a while every time i'd install a mod it would say that I was installing the mods for the wrong game, even though they were SE mods for Skyrim SE. An update fixed it but im still using plenty of mods that I installed during this time period. Maybe they could be causing this issue? They working flawlessly otherwise but its the only thing I can think of.

Ah, yeah. That'd probably be where issue is routed.

If you're down for quick experiment, I've got an idea that could in theory bypass the error (though fixing game state bug would be better)

Give me a few minutes to think about/write out instructions

  1. Open collection's control folder (highlighted yellow)
  2. Copy collection.json to keep backup to restore file
  3. Open ^ with notepad++ (use alt+0 to collapse data)
  4. Expand line 1 & 2 and look at their applicable fields
  5. Manually edit to correct (assuming it is incorrect)
  6. Retry collection upload again to see if it persists

Alright I will try this. Where do I find the collections.json file though?

Is collection.json empty? Hrm. Maybe I'm thinking of when its already been uploaded... or from after cloning. I'll set up new collection to remember how it works but you had said earlier that an update fixed the wrong game error? Did you create this collection prior to that?
I've heard of the bug but never seen it was fixed, besides workaround by disabling game extension that it thinks it is. I.e. SkyrimVR?

After quick test, are you cloning or making new? If new, I spoke too soon bc collection.json doesn't generate until upload. My bad.
I thought it updated existing state once created as I generally work with (and can edit) clones of their previous draft vs new

But now I'm curious if your draft actually does have collection.json bc if so, that clone's metadata should be there.

Yeah it has the file, I just cant find the specific part you were talking about. And I can kind of remember the update, I have a bad habit of letting updates sit for a real long time but from my memory it was the second to last update.

Had random thought and am able to reproduce

Double-click mods in Mods tab and check info panels > Game Section to see if they're assigned correctly.
May be a result of them being assigned incorrectly due to your weird wrong game thing when adding, etc.

Possibly check your download folder/<game> archive source assignment as well.
Bc I remember reading something about someone having to manually move stuff.
